Rear Brake Pad Life

Hi folks! How many miles should I get on rear OEM brake pads on a 2007 TSX? I replaced my niece's pads at 77k and now, 40k miles later, she is hearing a noise that sounds like it could be a wear indicator. I have not seen her car yet so it may be something other than the pads. I am not sure if the pads I replaced at 77k were original but they were shot. If the brakes are gone, think I will go with Akebono ProAct this time instead of Acura/Honda.

there are many different variables in determining pad life.

inspect the car first!
see, what is actually making the noise.

it could be a dragging rear caliper.
it could be her driving style causing the pads to eat up faster.

I use Autozone's Duralast Cmax Gold pads and they have been wonderful.

report back on what you find!!

I only got about 35,000 miles on OEM rear brakes. I replaced with OEM. I now have +115,000 miles on the TSX and still on original front pads and still on second set of OEM rear pads. I only had to turn the rotors about 20K ago because of vibration during braking exiting from the hwy.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, I will inspect first. Based on what I have read on a couple Acura forums, 40k on rear TSX pads is pretty good. However, she says the noise goes away when she applies the brakes. I would think the noise would get louder if it is coming from the wear indicators?

My experience is that the rear brakes wear a lot faster than the fronts, depending on the type of driving. With a lot of stop and go/city driving (which is what I do), one would be lucky to get 20k out of the backs. There are lots of theories why, but I tend to believe that the amount of heat the back pads get in city traffic and the fact they're very undersized means the wear faster. I have a friend that had a 2006 Accord (v6 I believe) that had the same issue.

My solution? I went with Hawk Ceramics on the back (from Marcus at HeelToeAuto.com, HeelToe Automotive ) and have not regretted it. I'm sure others will chime on their favorites, but the basic idea is: go aftermarket, the Acura/Honda rear brake pads suck.

And yes, it's probably the indicators that are making the initial noise. It'll get worse and be more consistent when the brakes wear more, which won't be long. I'd check them ASAP (and also check the calipers, etc.) and then replace.

I will know for sure this w/e, but shouldn't the wear indicators make the most noise when brakes are applied?

It was the pads. The driver side wear indicator was rubbing and the passenger side was almost gone too. I replaced with Akebono ProAct ACT537's. Caliper slide pins were free but I cleaned and lubed them (Sil-Glyde) for good measure. Should be good for at least another 40k. Thanks again for your help.

the OEM rear brake pads lasted 150K+miles mostly highway driving on my 06 tsx. Still have the original fronts.

Yes, type of driving has a major impact on pad life. People have reported 20-25k with hard stop/go and you report 6x+ that much with mostly highway driving.

I've got 116k on my 08 and I'm on my 3rd set of rear pads. Just replaced the fronts about 20k ago. I do very mixed driving.

This appears to be typical for OEM rear pads. The poster who reported 150k+ miles is way out on the end of the bell curve.

My car has manual transmission so that helps. It still has the original clutch.
