Oil Capacity

Hey guys, I'm going to order an oil extractor pump but I'm not sure how big it should be. Does anyone know how much oil the TSX takes?

Yep, they use them a lot in boats and european cars that don't have a drain plug. It makes it ridiculously easy to change your oil. Basically all you do is pull out your dipstick and insert a tube down into your oil pan. Then you just pump away like a bicycle pump. The oil is sucked into a large plastic drum which you can empty back into the oil containers you used to fill the car. Once the oil is drained, you change the oil filter and fill her up with oil.

It's very clean and easy. Here's the one I was going to buy until I found out that they don't ship to Canada: http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/MIT-7400.html

what if..

what if the tube that is sucking out the oil gets caught on something within the engine. the dip stick doesn't get stuck because it is metal, but the tube going in looks like rubber/plastic??

Can you get the tube down far enough into the engine (to oil pan presumably) to suck out all the oil? What about the crud that presumably goes out the drain hole?

Maybe stupit questions.

Here's how it works:

Yes it does if there is any. However, your oil filter should be the place where the crud would accumulate.

I just have to ask why?

I can understand when there is no drainplug or even in a case where a cartridge type filter is used and is accessible from under the hood(no need to get under the car) or maybe even if there is a big nasty skid plate in your way but on a TSX why? You still have to get under the car to change the filter which is about 6 inches from the drainplug! And when you break the oil filter free its still going to make a mess and your still going to need a catch pan of some sort under the car.

It's not just for my TSX I'm also going to be using it on an SLK, an M3 and a XC70 I was just curious more than anything. It's also useful for other fluids like transmission oil and coolant.

Never saw an oil filter like that BMW. "On top" of engine is odd. Even more odd is the housing and fibrous filler (like an air filter) instead of a "can."

Are some of your cars besides the M3 like that?

A lot of cars use cartridge style filters on Dan's Volvo it is the same idea except the filter is in the oil pan sort of off to one side, but it is just the element. The benz is under the hood they have been like that since as long as I can remember- the real old school diesel benz' had a little metal handle once you took the cover off(sort of like a really cheap old school lantern), it was kind of cool.

The "Can" filter as you reffered to it is the same thing just in a housing with threads and a gasket- go buy a cheap "can" style filter and cut it open you'll see basically the same thing. The thing that I don't get is often the cartridge style filters cost more, a lot more in fact and there is clearly a lot less to them not only in materials, but in constrcution costs as well.

LOL even back in the mid-late 80's GM used a cartridge style filter in there 2.5L 4cyl. engine anyone who has changed one of these will remember the damn thing- what a mess it made! It was also in the oil pan but some models that used this engine didn't have a drainplug, the filter was the drain! GM stopped using it after the "4 tech" engine was retired and just started again in some oldsmobiles that have a 3.4L V6 the new version is MUCH improved from there original attempt. But I digress.....

Yes I figured the can contained a filter element like that. I just hadnt seen one like that.

I'm new to engines other that American V8s. Haven't messed at all with rice mills or sauerkraut mills, or lutefisk mills for that matter.
