? on new Engine breaking-in/first oil change

I purchase my 06 TSX 2weeks ago and follow the owner's manual on breaking the new engine and that is for the first 600 miles I keep speeds below 60mph and I never revs it pass 4000 rpm. I do the first 600 miles with some city and highway driving. So I continue to break it in until the 1000 miles now I varies the speeds pass 60 to 80mph and occasionally goes up to 5500rpm or so. Now my question to you guys is that the owner's manual says that I should do my first oil change at the shedule maintenance. Should I get rid of the break-in oil that comes from the factory now it is OK now if I switch over to synthetic oil with the new engine. When did you guys does your first oil change after breaking-in and and what miles was that.

Earlier of 8,000 miles or 6-9 months, depending upon conditions. Stay away from synthetic.

There's some real oil experts on this board, but not me. Looks like you have a careful plan, I'm sure you will have a fine breakin. The change oil soon is a bad idea though.

I did my first oil change at 5,000 miles. And remember the key to proper break in is to VARY the rpms and not to drive at a constant rpm during break in.

First, welcome to the forum. Before the full out hazing begins and another n00b declares the board unfriendly or mistakes our fashion of joking around as seriousness, please search before you post. Your questions have been covered multiple times already.

Nice guys! I only post to other noobs so you don't tear me a new one while I build up a post count that will take years...

I don't like the definitive answer, where you just wait 8,000 miles.

Hey, I just found a search button at the top of the page, can stop using google!

Hi....I just picked up my Glacier Blue TSX today and the manual says nothing about staying under 60 mph. It does say to avoid hard starts and stops until 600 miles. As long as the revs are low as in 6th gear you can still pick up the speed a little.

I test drove a new Si which led me to the TSX. Si was really fun and I almost bought it. The salesman encouraged me, no, instructed me to basically low gear redline it at every chance that I could on the back road test drive. I asked about the break in, explaining that I didn't want to over rev, etc. He said 'Honda's don't have or need a break in'
So anyway, I decided on the TSX (PWP, 6MT) and mention break in period to the salesman and service manager. They both said the same thing as the Honda guy.

I didn't take that as a free licsense to go out and beat my new car but I haven't babied it to its current 2,025 miles...

Just thought that I'd share that....

Yeah I tell ya, if driving it hard is bad for break-in there are definitely some cars on the lots at dealers I would not want given the way these sales guys tell people to drive them!

Matt.......I agree. I had to drive 73 miles from the dealer where I bought the car back to my home. There was no way to keep it under 60mph. Again..........as long as the revs are low the speed doesn't matter as long as it's within reason.. At 70 mph the car was only at 3,000 rpm in 6th gear. It's called cruising........no stress....no mess.

Exciting. When you got your car, take a look of the manual that is in the glovebox. My 2004 manual suggests there is a break in period during the first 600 miles. The basic direction that you might want to follow is: take it easy, avoid driving with a lead foot, and constantly varying the RPM. Have a good trip.

My salesman told me the car needs no break in, and I should rev it all over the place, to the red line. So the car is used to the red line, and not acustomed to just a thin RPM band.

I did not take this advice. I went with vary RPM, no WOT in the first 1,000 miles, and brought up the peak by 200 RPM increments. Oil consumption was 20 ounces in 2,500 miles.

The sales people I dealt with did not mention anything about the break in period and I forgot to ask them at the time of the purchase. I just hit 200 miles on my 06 TSX! There is definitely conflicting information out there on the break in period. I have read both sides: a) the take it easy, keep it under 60 mph for the first 600 miles method and 2) the go ahead and rev it up to redline every once in a while method. Well, I've decided that I am going to take what makes sense to me from both sides and just use good ole common sense for the first 600 miles. I have been keeping the speed under 70 mph, at about 3,000 rpm and reving it from 3,500 to 5,000 rpm every once in a while on the freeway.

Just follow the boards suggestions. Vary the RPMS even on the highway. Dont do anything with constant RPM's. Dont change oil until 5000 miles.
