Pictures of Software

Started work on TL with complete understanding of software navigation and external OS workings. I also took pictures of every menu and submenu to give everyone a clear understanding of system navigation. I actually found one more sub-menu that no one else found listing program Exceptions (within History hold down menu for 5 secs). Anyone else finding any other system menus I am missing would be of great help.

Cool Hardware Photos

Slowly at work with the TL system. Took apart the Navigation System in the trunk to get a better idea of its inner workings. Took detailed, high-resolution, pictures with my digital camera. All component serial numbers and ID's are visible. I also took pictures while I was taking it apart to show everyone each step along the way. I put it back together and everything is working perfectly. The DVD player is standard but underneath player is the guts of the system. TL file name clearly printed on Front Panel PCB. Here is the link to the hardware photos. If you want a ZIP file of the photos PM me and I will send you the link.

People here have gone through a bunch of DVD+R DL discs trying to make backup copies of their navi DVDs and use them in the system (I usually frequent the TL board--don't know if the TSX is exactly the same or not). No one has gotten them to work in the Alpine drive. If you put in a "normal" DVD-ROM, e.g. Plextor, Liteon, maybe the backup will work. Can you try this, since you've gotten good tearing everything apart and putting it back together?

Dirac,
I currently use a DVD-R in my Alpine drive to load my modified files. I have not actually made a backup copy of the disc because I have no need at the moment since I leave it in the drive. But I do have a Double Layer DVD writer in my laptop so I will see if I can backup the entire thing and get it to work repeatedly. I will tell you in a day or so how it goes.

Don't waste a disc. I've just tried it myself and sent a $7 DL DVD+R to waste.

G0d I'm tired..... I just read this entire thread.

Some very cool screens people have made. Hats off to Bysin (wherever he is) and all those who contributed.

Wouldn't it be cool if a different image would come up every time you started the car? I know this is probably impossible but I can dream.....

Anyway, cheers!

What I meant is, could you actually remove the drive itself from the NAVI unit and use an off-the-shelf DVD drive. It's possible that the Alpine drive can't (maybe on purpose) read DVD+R DL discs. Many, many people have tried DL discs with the built-in drive without success.

I have actually disassembled my NAVI and I found that the drive is a normal DVD drive but I am not sure of its internal configuration. I have pictures if you would like them, just PM me. I beleive that it can be replaced with another DVD drive with the appropriate modifications.

That's too bad. Getting rid of the nag screen is great but I was disappointed to see that there is still a long blank screen followed by a "Go" button. I was hoping my new splash screen would remain on until the "Go" button. Also, I'd love to nuke the "Francais" button, too. (Canadian models)

No, just look at the last time he was on-line. I've seen it change several times after the last time he posted.

Is the sliding DVD slot cover independent of the drive itself? If not, I doubt you could replace the drive without doing some sort of hack to tell the system the new non-existent cover is constantly shut.

You're accusing him of being a lurker and being lame when you are stalking him?

Yes the cover is independant of the drive. The cover just consists of a simple push button on the back side that is wired into the main processor.

That's good news! Maybe I can upgrade and make my hacked DVD copies work after all.

DVD Drive in TL is in the trunk. On the right side - there is a plastic flip cover that covers the DVD drive. Flip it up and you can get to the dvd rom drive.

what do you mean by simply writing english properly? anyway im actually paying for my car and all i could afford was a salvage TSX which has been inspected by my local acura dealer and they have found NOTHING wrong with it, they said its like a brand new one, except for the engine which has 30k miles.
