Loud "Rattle" upon hard exceleration...

I am using the term "rattle" because that's what I think best suits the sound- there is also a slight vibration and a subtle grind maybe? Just an all around odd noise for a brief second... and its freakin me out a little. I never really pushed the engine hard before so I am not sure if this is something I should hear normally or not. Here is the situation: (I have an 04 AT )Say I am going 50mph stomp the gas hard and the engine revs up and sounds like its toy car or something really harsh and not smooth for a brief spurt then settles in and sounds fine again. This is the first and only noise I have ever heard come from the engine this way. It seems to be coming from right in front of the steering wheel~ I looked and don't see anything loose or not bolted down etc.... I am right at 49120 miles so if something is going and needs to be fixed now is the right time to get it in under warranty. As I type this out I think I am answering my own question about calling the dealer right away but I wanted to see if anyone else has had this happen to them before?

Definitely have the dealer take a look at it before 50K miles so you can get it taken care of under warranty. Even if they can't isolate and/or fix it, at least they will have seen it under warranty and you have a leg to stand on once it potentially breaks for good when you are out of warranty.

I'd have the dealer check it out. I don't think it's anything major...perhaps your header, downpipe, cat, or heat shield is loose. (If I'm imagining your description correctly)

im pretty darn positive its the intake. if it sounds when flooring then faints away, its the airflow being taken in.

Can you make a sound clip?
This is when in D mode?
Is the engine downshifting when this happens?

Holy crap! How dumb- I can't believe I posted that spelled that way. Anyway, thanks for all those that responded. Yes, it happens when in D upon stomping the gas hard and lasts only a brief second or two. The last time it happened I was running on a flat highway and I was going about 50ish then went to pass someone. I ACCELERATED to about 80 and heard this growling vibration that really freaked me out. The intake thought does sound to be a good one and I will use that when going to the dealer as a starting point. Thanks again all and sorry for the misspelling. Man I feel really dumb now.

*** No, not down-shifting and I can make a sound clip if it would help?

Me Too

I am also in Maryland - have the exact same issue. The dealership is telling me it is nothing - a "normal TSX sound"...have you figured it out yet?

I had a very tinny-metallic rattle sound happen upon acceleration after the engine warmed up... usually in the 2500-3500 rpm range. I brought it in twice, and the dealership finally found a loose heatshield part near the catalytic converter. He "clamped" it and now it's fixed. I'm at work, so I don't have the exact words the service guy used, but hopefully this helps somebody.
