i-VTEC sound?

This is my first car made by Honda so I'm not familiar with i-VTEC. I've been driving around like a grandma until recently (to break in) and noticed when I accelerate hard I hear this whining noise (kind of high pitched sound). Is this sound from i-VTEC kicking in?

Is that an AT transmition you have?

Check to see if your whinning sound corresponds to this: http://www.acura-tsx.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12000

I wouldn't say that VTEC/i-VTEC sounds like whining, and in fact you may not even notice it unless you have the resonator off--this thread explains how VTEC works:

Yes it's an AT. The whining noise only appear when the RPM goes up to like 5k. I thought it was i-VTEC. Maybe I should get it checked out.

So I won't be able to hear i-VTEC when it kicks in? Anyone have a video clip or sound clip of i-VTEC kicking in from inside the car?

my experience w/ iVtec, you're most likely to hear a mechanical noise coming from behind the glovebox, and the exhaust tone will slightly change if you have an intake.

To be honest, I've never heard a difference in sound when Vtec or i-Vtec kicked in on final stage with a stock intake and exhaust. I feel the kick in the butt, but I don't hear the difference, except for the revs going higher.

It's not like it's a turbo or anything such. Then, you hear a high-pitched whinning, but not with a Vtec system. Why would it? It's just a more agressive cam lobe working on a larger rocker combined with a retard on the cam's °, giving out a greater lift and duration. I don't see how that can change the sound effect, especially with an intake that's equipped with a sound deadening resonator.

Lung Fu Mo Shi recorded in 2nd Gear with an Injen intake, which you can hear the "changeover" noise that xizor mentions:
http://www.acura-tsx.com/forums/show...highlight=VTEC

Because you still have the resonator and no intake, you may not be able to hear the VTEC engage, but it should give you some indication of what it sounds like.

I couldn't hear it before I got my Injen intake but occasionally I did hear the sound behind the glovebox that xizor mentioned. VTEC kicks in around 6200rpm.

Is that all?

I can hear that sound too on my stock resonator, the crossover change. I've been hearing this all along.. I thought people were saying there was a change in tone, like it was getting more guttural or something, as if it had suddenly gained 500cc of displacement.

Then I withdraw my previous comments.. :o

No, I can hear very clearly a high pitch whinning sound came from the engine when the vtec kicks in on my prelude & civic. Dunno about the ivetc on tsx because mime is still not break in yet, so I still drive like a grandpa

That's what I hear when I downshift (5AT SS) and step on the gas. I don't exactly know at what RPM the sound starts though (I'm guessing around 5000). So I should get my tranny checked out? My car was built in March '04. Maybe they put a vtec instead of i-vtec in mine. It sounds pretty cool though.

the whining noise your talking about is most like just the motor noise from high rpm.

My car sounds similar to this one:

http://www.fujitsubo.co.jp/imglib/sdra/sc_vol5/23.rm

I don't have the fujitsubo exhaust but I can hear change in tone (which occurs around 32 seconds into the audio).

I have a feeling that you are hearing the balance shafts/timing chain spinning because the tsx motor is quite quiet compared to alot of honda motors.

In my S2000 if you remove the cover from the air filter (yes I know you lose a few hp due to heat) you hear a DEFINITE loud kick-a$$ sound when you hit VTEC. It scares unsuspecting passengers! Good times. PS I baby my Honda too...almost 5 years old and I'm at 6700 miles. That's 67-hundred.

But the sound doesn't increase gradually. You can't hear it when below ~5k but then it starts somewhere between 5 and 6k rpm. I know if I take it to the dealer they'll say it's normal (what else is new?) so I'm not going to bother. Maybe I'll just mention it when I go in for an oil change. Thanks for the replies!

that whining noise is the VTEC.

I've also heard it much more pronouced in my brothers Daihatsu Sirion (less insulation, smaller engine) and in other Hondas.

You're either hearing valve chatter, balancer shafts or the valve lift change (VTEC switch over to higher lift cams, etc.)

So... if the iVTEC kicks in at 6200rpm, the car will start a "small" turbo? Thanks.

So some TSXs make i-VTEC sound and some don't? I didn't hear it in Lung Fu Mo Shi's video. The sound is very noticeable from inside the car (it does kind of sound like a turbo). Thanks

Well, my sound clip has a VERY overpowering Injen intake strapped to it that will drown out all other sounds when it's roaring that loud. It could be there...you'd just never hear it.
