Fuel Efficiency in a New TSX

Fuel Efficiency in a New TSX
I have had my new TSX for only one week and am as proud as a new father, but have been a little disappointed by the fuel efficiency. I have calculated 18-21 mpg city in its first 600 miles (I don't even drive with a leadfoot). Since this is much lower than the published 23-32 mpg's, I am curious if any veteran TSX'ers have noticed an increase in fuel econmy after the first thousand miles or so. I am practicing all of the wise tips that are commonly known to preserve fuel efficiency. Thanks for your input.

Don't worry - I found the same thing initially - the fuel efficiency was only about 20-21 mpg for the first 1000 miles or so. Now I am up to about 2800 and I am consistently getting about 24-25 mpg for mostly city driving. Moreover, the engine has become more responsive and even smoother. I am loving it!

Thanks for all of your encouraging responses. I live in Lexington, KY (not exactly a major metropoliatan area) which can be a suburban hell with one traffic signal after another. 35-45mph is usually my top speed for an average day but it only lasts for a block or two. I absolutley love most every aspect of the car so far (except for no daytime running lights- what's up with that?) and am looking forward to watching the odometer turn.

i had 219.2 miles and filled up with 13.908 gallons. that comes out to a whooping 15.76mpg. yes, that sucks monkey balls (mostly city). but i was driving my car as aggressive as it gets with at least a single redline a day..... i guess at least i let my car warm up at every startup

What color is yours? I have seen ABP, SSM, CGP, and MSM on the streets of Lex. A friend of mine saw a Milano Red one as well. Did you buy it at Courtesey, Louisville, or Cincy?
BTW the Canada models get DRL, Heated Mirrors, and Indigo Blue. Lucky bastards.

I get on average around 260-290 per tank when i am doing local driving it only takes about 13 or so gallons, when i took it on a 300 mi roadtrip though i made it the distance with about a 1/4 tank to go. once i got off the highway though it started sucking the gas down again like a drunken sailor. It seems taht my needle starts to dip at about 50 miles, i got about 1800 on it now and still no change, this worries me a little bit

I just filled up my new TSX with it's second tank of gas. The first tank was used doing combined city and highway driving and I got 25.0 mpg. The second tank was used on an all highway trip - no higher than 70 mph. I got 32 mpg on that tank. I still have less than 1000 mile on the odometer and have been driving very conservativly so far.

My TSX has almost 15000mi. When I first got it in April, it was averaging 29mpg. Now the lowest average I get is 26.9. I have never gotten anything less than 400 a tank. When I do my highway trips, I can get 32mpg easy. I live in Raleigh, NC and I do about 80%city/20%highway. Guess I'm lucky. I remember a few people posting 500+mi per tank back in April on some highway trips.

On my first fill-up I got (24.83) calculated and 25.6 (trip computer). On my second tank of gas I am doing about 26.5 (trip computer) so far. I have a 6MT. I would suggest a road trip to improve your mileage.

Great to see there are other central KY folks on here who are also proud of their TSX's. I purchased my NBP from Courtesy here in Lexington for a pretty fair price (27,250 with nav, destination charge included- not counting tax, title and registration). Only other TSX that I have spotted in the region so far was a SSM- I almost wanted to stop and talk about cars to a stranger..... Acura's must do that to you!

This is my 5th Acura, but my first nav. I will not be my last of either. I absolutely love the voice recognition and the nav system in the TSX. I wanted it ever since I started seeing the 03 Accord commercials on TV. I am so glad I waited for my TSX. I haven't had it very long (week and half), but I haven't had a hint of the problems other people were talking about on theirs.
Speaking of that. I don't get your mileage problem. Generally the 5AT has been having better numbers than the 6MT. The reverse of most cars. It is just a TSX thing. If it doesn't improve after your break-in period, you might have a problem.

Gas mileage definitely gets better as the engine breaks in. For the first few tanks, I got 25-26 MPG. Lately, I can't get worse than 28 MPG even with redlining a few times a day. On highway trips with cruise control, I have gotten over 31 MPG. I can't wait to see how much better fuel economy gets once the gas stations switch back over to summer forumula and I get some lightweight wheels/tires.
I do wish that 6th gear wasn't so short though; 3k RPMS is awfully high for 72 MPH, but it does allow cruise control on the highway to have plenty of pull. When I had a 5AT loaner for a few weeks, I noticed it always downshifting to 4th when going up a hill with cruise control on. The MT can maintain speed up almost any grade in 6th.

After the first 1000 miles I was getting 26mpg. I just went over 2000 miles and calculated 30.4mpg after my fill up. The 30.4mpg was for a roadtrip to Laughlin with about 85% highway cruizing at 80mph and the other 15% of city driving around LA. If I drive all highway at 70mph for a full tank I could probably average around 33mpg now. I hope I can get 35mpg after fully broken-in (after 10K miles).

I'm getting about 25 mpg with mostly city driving. I did make a 1000 mile trip to Dallas and got over 30 mpg. The cruise was set at 80 mph + the whole way. You got to love drive through Oklahoma. Speed limit 75!
I have 7800 miles on my car. I'm happy with my gas mileage.

Just took my first long trip in my TSX this weekend. Went 237 miles going (90% highway, 70-75MPH ) on 7.59 gals = 31.2 MPG. Almost exactly the EPA est of 32 MPG. I have about 1800 mi total on her. Weather was warm and dry. No complaints in the mileage department!

Nearing the 10k miles mark, I'm still not seeing the gas mileage I expected. With largely city driving, the gas mileage has been right around the 20s and when I take a longer trip that involves freeway driving, it goes up to around the mid-20s but still not anywhere near what I expected. Still, it is more or less the same mileage I used to get from my Integra. Plus, the stop and go traffic (even on the freeways) constantly kills my gas mileage.

Its getting better
I am averaging about 24.5- 25.5 MPG.
The trip states 26-27 MPG.
Mix city 30% hwy 70%
I did notice with the last I filled up (with the gas light on) it took 14.1 GALS
And thirty bucks
The gas tank I believe holds 17.1...a two gal reserve.. wow.
Have 1700 on her.
Seems to be better as the miles add on.

It seems like my mpg's have increased to 24 city after a couple fill ups. Since my car was driven 400 miles from another dealership before I took possession of her, I can't help but think that the runner might have tanked it up with the cheaper fuel grade. Now I can't wait to take a road trip just to check out the highway performance.

I usually don't pay attention to this kinda stuff, but all the fuss has made me worry. I've kept tabs on my last tank, and I got 24.5 MPG doing 100% city driving with not a lot of idling in traffic (I have a manual transmission with 8500 miles on the odo, and I use Mobil 93 octane). I accelerate fairly aggressively, and I beat the EPA estimate of 21 MPG city by quite a bit. I could have done even better by easing back on the throttle. It's really dependent on how you drive. My conclusion: you guys worry too much about gas mileage.
I'm driving to Chicago tonight and just filled up, so I'm all set up to do a 100% highway run. I'll let you guys know how it goes.
....And then I'll go back to not caring about my gas mileage.
