extended warranty yes or no?

I recently purchased a TSX, but I did not buy the extended warranty. I still have time to reconsider my decision. Should I buy it or not? Please give your reasons. Thanks.

i would do it..they conned me into buying it. he told me there are alot more computers in this car than ever before. he also said that theres alot of complicated electrical systems that can go wrong. Im glad i got it because just recently my radio started acting up. every time i go to turn up the volume, it skips, for instance if the volume is on lets say 15..ill turn the knob to the right (turning volume up) it will go 15 16 17 18 then skip back to like 13...im like wtf???
just one reason im glad i got the extended warranty.. u never knwo what will break, and when it will.

I did it... the main reason I went for it is because with my RSX, I had to have my trans rebuilt right after the original warranty would have run out, so it basically paid for itself. It's worth it for me just for the piece of mind.

"If your Acura has less than 56,000 miles and is less than 54 months old you can protect your investment with Acura Care- the only vehicle service contract backed by the strength and stability of American Honda."

I plan to wait. I might trade it.

The car could wreck. Or get stolen. If I still have it when it closes in on 50k, I'll probably buy it.

Extended warranties are a bad investment. The car comes with a good warranty.

It's not like you bought a Chrysler or a Hyundai. You bought a very well-made car - why bet more money (every single month) that you didn't? That "more computers" is crap - cars are more reliable than ever before. F&I guys just say that to try to scare people. The ECUs in cars have more in common with space shuttle parts than they do the PC on your desk.

I bought an extended warranty on my 99 CR-V. This is how/why. I said no, no, no every time. I'd gotten divorced 18 months before and my credit wasn't the best, and I knew I wasn't going to get the best interest rate. It was December, late in the month, and finally the F&I manager said to me "Look, we're behind in our warranty numbers. You take this extended warranty and we will give up our back end on the financing, and your interest rate will be 1 point lower, and you monthly payment will go down. Just take the warranty - please!"

And that's what it will take for me to ever buy an extended warranty. On anything. Throwing it in. Often you can get them to do it - at the point of sale. Not after.

See, the F&I guy makes his money on add-ons like warranties. That's why they don't let the salesman sell it to you. But if he doesn't hit his quota, he could lose his job, so occasionally (especially with known reliable brands like Honda, Acura, and Toyota) they end up throwing a few in.

Read this article on consumer reports.org.

It's not about cars, but the basic math and profit margin figures are about the same.

You'd like to consider a few things. If you are a low-mileage owner, meaning you don't plan on putting much mileage to your car, it could be good. If you drive a lot (especially highway miles), forget about it, you'll be throwing away some big money. Finance yourself your own warranty instead.

If you are not keen on following the prescribed maintenance schedule, get an extended warranty. Your ass is covered if you neglected some maintenace and it comes down to failures. If you are punctual about your maintenance, forget about the ext'd warranty, your good maintenance will act in itself as a supplemental warranty up to a certain point.

Maybe.

Do you know more than the undewriter of the extended warranty? (It is POSSIBLE because of sites like this!)

"If your Acura has less than 56,000 miles and is less than 54 months old you can protect your investment with Acura Care- the only vehicle service contract backed by the strength and stability of American Honda."

So, like everything, it all depends. If I'm closing in on 50k miles and that $4000 transistor in the center console hasn't failed yet but it looks like the failure rate is close to 100% it would be silly NOT to buy the extended warranty for $1200.

Definite "maybe" on the extended warranty!

Do you know more than the undewriter of the extended warranty? (It is now POSSIBLE to have more knowledge than the underwriter because of sites like this!)

The only good thing about extended warranties is that it helps inflate the paycheck of the dealer's finance manager. Most electronics if they are going to fail, they will fail early in the life of the car, well within the warranty period. And the extended warranties have so many exclusions, that many mechanical problems are not covered. Plus Acura's warranty if pretty good. If you get a new car every three or four years, you may not even reach the point you need an extended warranty. Save your money and if you do want one, wait until just before the warranty expires, and then buy one.

Buy it. It's a solid investment with the TSX.

I'm going to soon purchase the extended warranty for my car.

I drive A LOT (3-4k miles per month). At that rate, my car will be out of warranty in just about 12-13 months. However, I paid cash for the car, and get $600 a month from my job as a car allowance. My plan is to bankroll the car allowance, and use that as my own personal "Warranty". I'd considered the extended, but that wouldn't last very long for me, either.

Purchasing an extended warranty is simply a placing a bet. It's pure gambling.

You are betting that you will incur repairs to the vehicle after it's manufacturer's warranty has expired (but before the extended warranty expires) that will exceed the cost of the extended warranty.

If this actually happens, then you "win". If it doesn't, then you "lose". Extended warranties frequently cost $1000 or more, which will buy a lot of repairs.

Roll your dice...

(Personally, I think they should be considered only on less-reliable makes, or in other unusual situation e.g. a salesman who puts 25K miles per year on the car).

Is an extended warranty a good deal? I think the answer depends on your tolerance for risk and ability to absorb unexpected expenses in your budget. For some, $1000 is cheap peace of mind that an unexpected repair won't leave them between choosing to fix the car or pay the mortgage. For others it would seem an unneccessary and frivolous expense. I tend to think that I placed my bet when I chose Acura - a brand that I believe has superior reliability and longevity. My perception (backed by reasonable reliability data) is that the risk that something unexpected and very expensive will go wrong down the road is very low and it's a chance I'm willing to take. That said, $1000 won't buy all that much repair-wise unless you're willing to buy parts and do the work yourself.
