Cut off switch? or what?
Haaa Haaa brady, you're dancing on the "head of a pin" to prove your point! OK, if you scout the road, and know that all traffic is out of the way, and do a "pre-flight" on your car before attemtpting a run. and the moon is full, and you have a tail wind and a lucky rabbits foot in your front (not back) pocket, then it is possible that a run to 140 is safe on public roads.
However, it still doesn't explain why the original poster can't get above 118....

vaaaaaaaaginas. I drive fast and the speed limit should be higher for me. There is no red text here I'm not being sarcastic. If the speed limit was faster and there was an extra lane I could get around all the mental midgets that create traffic BECAUSE THEY'RE DRIVING SO SLOW! If you're in the left lane on the highway and you're not doing at least 8 above I pray that you get the hell back in the right lane or God smotes you. Especially when some douche pulls into the left lane in front of me going 8 mph slower than I am. If i didn't love this car so much I'd RAM those people.
Sorry for the rant, but I moved from the east coast to the midwest and I'm still furious everyday I get on the road. There's probably 5 people in MO and KS that drive with some understanding that others are on the road (i.e. signaling, yielding, proper speed on an on-ramp, proper distance from the car in front, headlights, etc. etc.)

I know what you're saying though man, and all my saying is just don't get too over confident because there are too many things that could happen that are out of your control.
thanks for stating the obvious.
like i said...the road i'm talking about that i know of is very very very unique. it's like the built it to speed on. i could take a drive down it, the entire length, and come back, and then do my craziness if i wanted to with fairly good confidence that no one passed the road in the meantime. it's almost always empty, i can't remember the last time i saw anything but a car/suv on it (no trailers etc). it's just the perfect road to open up a car on. would i go 140? not likely. but i didnt feel bad pushing 120 in the past.
there is one variable that's nearly impossible to control on open roads though....wind. it could F you up like nothing.

i agree here in NJ, a lot of traffic is caused by idiots that are driving too slow. i think it's nearly as dangerous, sometimes more dangerous, than driving too fast. people can go the speed limit in the left lane, but only if their passing, and quickly getting in the right lane. cruise control is almost a useless feature in NJ, not because of traffic, but because of idiots. i couldn't even set cruise control at 45 and expect to let it ride for an extended period of time.
where in the east did you move from? cause many states up near NJ have lack of driving common sense too!

edit: and don't get me started on how most choose to drive in inclement weather.

i'm from PA originally. i agree. i feel so uncomfortable sitting there having my gas pumped for me. plus i hate it that some aren't careful (my dad's car has a chip right near the gas door from the attendant banging the nozzle on it).
PA drivers are pretty good for the most part. i think so at least. most areas they stay to the right and out of the way. i dont know why, and i realize there's not that much traffic, but PA never really irritated me much.
and it's funny cause when i come back to jersey from NE PA, i hit the deleware water gap on route 80 near the toll plaze, i start seeing all the nj and ny plates, and thats when everything goes to shit.
and yes, i won't get started on people driving in "inclement" weather.

Anyway, I said what I had to say and I will leave it at that.
BTW, I was born in PA too
Have you guys ever heard of the little towns of Sellersville and Souderton?

I've driven on that same freeway at least 500 times on the way to work, and around the time I drive it's pretty empty. One day there was a big tire tread in the middle of the road right after a big hill. I was going 105 and had to swerve hard to miss it. It was a big reality check for me and I realized that I was lucky to have not crashed. That's when I realized that I should never feel confident at super high speeds on any road.

I don't know what i said that would indicate that i was advocating driving with no regard for caution. i specifically said in one post that there was some risk involved to speeding at ANY speed above the speed limit. i've witnessed accidents, some pretty horrible. i know the risks, and 99.9% of the time i try to drive defensively. everyone now and then though, i have a little fun. i wouldn't drive above 80 for extended periods of time. why 80? i don't know, but i feel pretty comfortable at that speed. above that, i'd have to have a lot of clear road ahead of me, or i'm just passing someone and then going back to 80.

fixed....just for you guys who believe in absolutes.

i think he needs to push it in sport shift again, he ran out of real estate last time. but since everyone says he's not allowed to push it, then who cares if he can't go above 118? maybe the car is doing society a favor because it's limiting him to that. in fact, i'm going to write congress and request that they write a bill requiring governors on all cars to be capped at 65. also, i think they should do automatic speed enforcement on highways, especially on toll roads. think of how much safer the world will be.

rt 287 anytime after 10pm.
done deal.
i have a 2006. today, on that lovely road in PA i mentioned before in this thread, i pused it up to 120. it went up to 110 rather easily. with the slight incline, it took some coaxing to get it to 120. i coulda pushed it further it felt, but the car started to get a little shaky, but seemed to be gripping the road fine. this is with the stock tires. i'm sure with maybe a better tire and maybe the aspec suspension, i would have been comfortable at 120. maybe next time i'll push it further, but i can assure you, it still had some power left (not a lot though). i don't think i can imagine it going up to 140 in my situation, maybe on a downhill road, or even flat. but this was a relatively straight 2 miles strech of highway, using sport shift.
Beoshingus,
your wasting your time typing out anything that resembles maturity or logical thought. you will find most of the people on this board will argue their point to death until you either just ignore them or agree with them.
there seems to be a definite age limit here, under age about 28 people are into doing stupid things such as street racing, driving too fast and trying to impress people with how "unique" their car is or how fast it can go.
you unfortunatly are arguing a point you will never win your point of view, it is too mature of a concept for about 2/3rds of the people on this site to grasp. (with a few exceptions)
all that will happen is everyone will flame you. its just like most anything someone has to die or be seriously hurt before anyone will listen to reason.
i wish they would start another section on this board for the people a little closer to our age.
now that i have said this i will get flamed, called names and shit talked. so before anyone feels like being childish know that i am unsubscribing from the thread and will not be reading it anymore to view any responces so flame away!

Wow. You know, i associate people who make generalizations as "pretty ignorant. making your car unique is a personal choice, why is that stupid? To some people, cars are their hobby. I'm not one of those people, but I do like to take care of my car and keep it nice looking. As far as driving too fast, that's relative to the situation. Maybe you should have said "driving wrecklessly" because that's what you meant. I'm sure even you drive "too fast" sometimes. If you're a 100% law abiding citizen, then kudos to you.
And don't go arguing that I am one of the immature posters you refer to because I'm a pretty mature person for my age, I have a level head, and I have lost close friends in car accidents due to error, weather, alcohol, and lack of responsibility.
People who make statements like these are as ignorant as those they are trying to be better than.
Here is a thought. I'm over 28. when I first got my car for a few months, I pushed it up to 125 before I decided to lift off.. Nowadays, it's impossible to find a nice long empty stretch of highway (I live in Los Angeles area), and I don't get that same urge to go crazy fast anymore (I had my car for 2 years now). I did find a nice stretch of empty highway this morning and I pushed it past 105mph..but I hit traffic and and lift off. Was I crazy? Some probably will say I am, and others will say I'm chicken shit . To each their own..
I'm not sure if the OP got his question answered definitively or not (I don't think there is a cutoff, but rather the car is drag limited). I do think that arguments about the relative safety of driving fast have been heard loud and clear.
Honestly, I don't think "my TSX can't go faster than 110mph" is a real problem, unless you're Pierre Kleinubing (sp). Don't believe me? Then ask the dealer about this, and see what they say.
This thread is done.
