Check your insurance rates.

There have been many threads about the cost of insurance and I am always amazed how much you guys are paying. 2006 6mt w/navi bought new, $400 a year. That's right a year. $500 deductible and $500,000 liability.

Okay, I live in a smaller town in the Mid-West and I am in my mid-forties. Probably the safest age group, but you guys are paying incredible amounts for insurance. You guys might want to shop around a bit more.

Come to NJ where we have the highest car insurance rates in the country. I assure you, you won't be paying $400 a year here. You'd be lucky to get that (if it's even possible) for 6 months. NJ FTL.

Definitely in a minority but wow, that's an excellent rate. Can I ask what your other coverages are?

I'll be paying $912 for 6 months for a 2008 TSX with 300/100K coverage and a $500 deductible once I finally pick her up.

Yeah, NJ sucks. I'm paying about $1500 for my 08 TSX, and $500 for my '99 Civic, per year.

So I guess there is a benefit to living in the middle of nowhere (kidding, but that's the only way you'll get a rate even approaching what you're paying). Shopping around for insurance is not as easy as it sounds; it's an extremely competitive market (and extremely lucrative; like toilet paper and tampons, doesn't matter how bad the economy gets, it's a "gotta have it") and if there is a drastic difference in rates for similar coverage, you need to ask yourself why. Of course that makes no difference here in Mass., since the rates are set by the state (and thanks to that, we have very few insurance companies to choose from)(although supposedly competition has been introduced this year; we'll see how that goes). And I'll compare rates with NJ any day for the highest insurance cost prize.

I'm paying about that. My last 6-month premium was $218 for full coverage 300/100K and $250 deductible. I'm 31, single, drive a 2007 5AT Nav, and live near Washington, D.C.

Of course, I'm with USAA and get a great rate, plus discounts every 6 months that I do not have an at-fault accident.

Even a distance of a few miles can matter quite a bit. I live about 20 miles from the San Antonio city limit - well within commuting distance. A common statement by my neighbors is that their auto rates dropped in half when they moved here. I think it's mostly due to lower theft rates, but it is truly amazing.

Age is another huge factor. I am 50, and the rates we pay on a whole slew of cars and motorcycles would make you younger guys feel very bad.

And last, the vehicle type. When we bought a new corvette in 2005 I was astonished how low the coverage was. Since the demographic for the TSX is relatively young, that will be a factor you can't really change.

USAA doesn't count. Their rates are too far below market value and that is not a service that is available to anyone in the general public.

All told, my fiancee and I pay about $1650/year on 2 cars, one of which is a convertible. Rate keeps coming down each renewal, which is nice.

I think USAA has been forced in a few states to offer services to the public. I managed to get a couple of quotes on car rates that were a bit lower than they were, but combined with my homeowner's it wasn't worth it to change. Their motorcycle coverage was out of sight expensive, so I dropped them years ago and have bikes with three different companies.

Haha, it counts as far as I'm concerned, lol.

BTW, the more accounts you have with them, the more you get discounted. I have my renter's insurance, auto insurance, and checking/savings account with them and I get more than 50% off my auto insurance rate because I have 3 accounts with them.

I pay about $600 every 6 months. For my age, I'd say that I have a pretty good deal. I've got full coverage, but I'm not sure on the coverage details. All I know is that it exceeds what is required by California and my bank. I believe I have a $250 comprehensive deductible and a $500 collision deductible.

Unfortunately, it's bound to go up somewhat as I won't have my student discount the next time I renew (I'll graduate by then).

I can echo this statement. I moved only 1 zip code in arlington, va, it was about 3 miles and my rates went down almost 60 bucks. I pay about 365 every 6 months. I'm 26, single and drive a an '06 5AT w/nav.
