After seeing firsthand what a couple of friends went through on their CL and Accords, I don't trust Honda auto transmissions.
I know it's mostly limited to the V6/auto combo and the tranny is outsourced, but it left a sour taste in my mouth, and it wasn't even my car.

I think the recent Honda transmissions are not significantly better nor worse than their competition with regards to overall durability/longevity.
Most of these fairly complex units should last 120-150K before requiring a rebuild, depending on how hard they are driven.
A single drain/refill (not multiple) with new Genuine Honda ATF-Z1 or Amsoi ATF in these transmissions every 30,000 miles is all that you need. Any more than that is completely unneeded, and will add little or no additional life to your transmission at all.
Driving GENTLY and changing the ATF every 30,000 miles is the two best things you can do to increase transmission longevity.

I live in GA, towards the bottom of the mountains where there are a lot of hills, Trannys usually go bad around here (on american made cars) at about 40,000 miles. I bought a brand new 06 AT in april also and i can already tell the difference in the transmission since i bought it. When it was BRAND new it shifted like a dream. You couldn't even tell the gear changes. Now I can feel it every now and then. Anyway, I still think it will last a good while, way beyond 40,000
I got 2,000 miles on it now, and its 1 month old today.

I rarely hear of Domestic ATs going bad around 40,000 miles...Ford AX4N transmissions maybe,
I would imagine that GM FWD automatics are quite popular in Atlanta, and I know of many with well over 100,000 miles on their GM automatics in the hilly regions without issues, so I don't know where you're coming from.
It is unrealistic for an automatic transmission to suffer a catastrophic failure in as little as 40,000 miles. It just doesn't seem possible.
If you really think that your driving conditions put such a great stress on the transmission, change the transmission fluid more frequently, perhaps a single drain/fill every 15K. Use a good synthetic fluid such as Amsoil ATF. Drive it gently.

actually ive been driving more grandma style than flooring it all the time. From a stop i think the highest rpm ive brought it to is 4.5k. But on highway ive got it up to 5.5k.
I was curious to see how well these trannys hold up because honda hasnt been making their trannys like they use to. For example the honda 6th gen accord 98-01 accords and acura cl's.
So far so good......i hope this tranny will last as long as my 88 civic. 18 year old(original) tranny and engine still running like day one :-)
The vehicles that my family has had bad luck with are fords. We had a van that the tranny completely died at 45,000 miles (or there about) and it was replaced under warranty and then we sold it.
We had a F150 where the tranny went bad at 40,000 miles and it was replaced again at about 50,000 or 55,000. It was ALWAYS in the shop having the tranny worked on, all was under warranty. We finally sold it to my Fiance's brother up in minnesota, he knew it had tranny issues, once it got up there on the flat terrain it never had a problem again.
Yes GA has mountains, the Appalachian mountains.
I have heard MANY people here say "If you buy a Ford sell it before 50,000 if you don't want to deal with Tranny problems"
just my
