Assistance w/buying an 05 in Oregon/Washington state

Hi everyone,

Since I have noticed that many people are getting excellent deals on their new TSXs (ie. $26,600 total drive out price for a 04/Nav) on the east and midwest states, I am curious to know if anyone has gotten a similar deal in the Pacific Northwest. Does anyone know of a dealership in the Portland, OR or Seattle, WA area that generally is not out to rip people off?

I am looking at a 05 CG/Nav Auto within the next few months, and would be very appreciative if someone could post of some prices they have gotten at a WA/OR lot. Thanks! Hope people are enjoying their new rides!

We bought a CG 5AT w/Nav from Kem Roos at Ron Tonkin Acura on Canyon Road in Beaverton. This was last August when TSX's were backing up 4-6 weeks out. I won't say that ANY dealership is not out to make money - they all are - but at that time they charged us MSRP when some other dealerships in the area were charging ADM to get on the list... (Kem is his first name, he's South African, I think...)

He was a pro without being a snake... but again, they are there to make gross profit, not friends...

It was possible to get an '04 for at least $1000 under MSRP. . . I don't know about now or for an 05.

On most things Oregon residents can just show their ID and they are "excused" from paying the Washington sales tax. I'm assuming that it would also apply to cars. I believe it applies to any of the bordering states. . . but I'm not entirely sure, haven't been an Oregon resident that long.

The best I could get was right at $500 under msrp, and I had to work awfully hard to get that. When I went up towards washington I couldn't even get that good a deal, it was msrp or nothing.

So your right, I read about all these good deals that everyone else was getting all around the country, but around here, its a fight to get msrp it seams.

Because I'm a Washington resident, even if I buy a new car in Oregon, I still pay the sales tax. Here's why: The OR car dealership asks for proof of residence during the sale (ie. drivers license); the dealership sends the registration material of the car to the state of WA Dept of License (hence WA state would then charge me the sales tax). Thus the dealership collects sales tax up front.

Some people, particularly those living on WA/OR border, have been trying to bypass paying WA state car registration fees by listing Oregonian friends/relatives addresses on their title. The cops are thus recently cracking down on this tactic by ticketing OR license plates (paticularly in my city, as I actually live in Vancouver, WA).

This also applies to other states as well with no sales tax (ie. New Hampshire, Alaska, Delaware, Montana). So regardless where I buy, OR or WA, I have to pay the tax.

I'm curious, did you buy your TSX at Ron Tonkin's Acura in Beaverton? Or would it be Acura of Portland off of 205?

Because how many people heard of the little city of Vancouver, WA? Vancouver. WA is actually considered part of Portland, OR metro area, hence I listed Portland, OR since it's a bigger city most people know where it is on the map. It's like people living in Orange, CA and saying they live in LA. Yeah, I know, logistics logistics..

the rate of tax you pay on your car is determined by where you live. a oregonian can buy a car in cali and not be charged for tax while a californian buy a car i oregan will be paying tax.

Too funny. A river blocks you from sales tax freedom!

I dunno, most people probably dont know where Temecula is, but I dont care, all the wine is MINE!

Thanks for the link. It appears as though people are having to bargain with the 2 Acura dealerships in Portland, OR. Internet sales people seem to be the best place to start.

You've obviously never BEEN to the 'Couv, Joe. No one wants to admit that they live in that burg.

It's like another frickin' country.

I just got a quote from a Costco rep regarding a 05 TSX auto w/nav. Here's what he told me-

Invoice: $26,800
Negotiated price: $28,200 (supposedly $1500 off MSRP he claims).

What do you guys think? Not a great deal I suppose But I continue to shop around to see what I can find.

Never go off MSRP, but what is it above invoice. 1400 above invoice may be ok for beginning of model year. Tough to say until more people get quotes.

It's hard to say if that's right or not, but it seems high to me. . . With as few changes as have been made I think it'd be crazy to raise MSRP by $1200. According to that guy the new MSRP for a Navi is $29,700, it was $28,490 last year (I don't think that includes dest. charges).

From what I've heard the costco deal is no longer such a great deal. I'd wait until we hear some real prices for the 05 before putting any money down. . . Then like BigWillie says you can figure out how much over invoice that is. . .

That statement is not entirely true. Yes, an Oregan resident can buy a car in California and not have to pay sales tax or license fees but that resident will not be able to drive the car off the dealer lot. The car will have to be dropped off in a different state where the paperwork will need to be notarized by the notary public. At that point the resident can drive the car back to Oregan with his/her one way trip permit.

That's wrong too. You essentially have the dealer fill out an Oregon "Trip Permit" that allows you 3-5 days of temporary license. Just take the form with you. Essentially you are on your own recognisance about that.

Been calling around some dealerships in WA/OR regarding the 05 TSXs auto/nav, and the dealerships are playing hardball. For those in WA/OR, here's what I found thus far:

1) A Honda dealership in Vancouver, WA apparently can order one for me. I call the 2 Costco reps here, and they claim to have been very slow in getting an accurate invoice/msrp price. But anyways, they offered $1500 off MSRP as their first quote. I'll call them again later this week so see if I can get it in writing.
2) Ron Tonkin Acura - Only $500 off MSRP for Costco discount. One of the managers here claim the $1500 off MSRP as "fishy and a scam"
3) Acura of Portland - never even called back regarding my offer of $28,200
4) Acura of Salem - MSRP firm. Wouldn't even consider the $28,200 for an 04 auto/nav
5) Acura of Seattle - MSRP firm
6) AAA of Oregon - not able to quote a price until Dec 04

It looks like as if #1 is the best option thus far. Getting a little doubtful of finding a better price. But in terms of color, I'm looking at a CG/black. Haven't seen too many of those around in WA/OR, but the brochures sure paint a pretty image.

Update on 05 TSX in WA/OR States

An update on the 05 TSXs in the Pacific Northwest area: Just got a call today from the Vancouver dealership I've been in contact with for the past few weeks. Apparently they just go their cars on the lot TODAY (That said, also got a few more calls from other dealerships in Portland and Seattle, and they appear to have just gotten their shipments in today as well).

The invoice for an 05 auto/nav: $26,995. Their offering, per Costco agreement, $1500 over invoice, so comes out $28,495. This price is the best I've seen out of the ENTIRE Washington/Oregon dealerships. No other dealerships would come off of MSRP ($29,700) for the 05s (except Ron Tonkin, who agreed to $500 off MSRP). Even the 04s these salespeople were not willing to budge more than $1000 off MSRP, so this deal seems pretty darn good considering this area's "stingy-ness" attitude.

Jojo77 (or anyone here in WA/OR), let me know if you find a better deal than this one. It looks like it's going to be real soon before I get my hands on one of these babies!

Give them a month or two, and when the hype of the 05's die down you will be able to get a good deal.

Also, please remember that no sales lizard gets to adjust price - only managers get to do that.

Go in and ask on December 28th... you can get a REALLY good deal that way!

Docboy: The best I could get either place was $28,960 out the door. I'm suprised they told you they were on the lot. I called both local retailers here and they didn't have them yet. It appears this deal is only $600 off msrp. Not sure what others are getting in the area though, just thought I would throw my quoted price from the local dealers out there.

docboy, I merged your new thread back with the other thread you were posting on 10 days ago. Since it's an update, you should keep posting on this thread about it for the sake of clarity, and the most info being related into one thread.

Thanks for the post. It helps so all of the members (least it does to me) here can see if anyone is getting ripped off.
