Weird (muffler?) problem

Here's the thing: I got off the highway one morning and noticed that the exhaust sounded louder than usual. The weird thing is that its only louder below ~2500rpm, thereafter it sounds normal. It also gets louder the more you drive, I'm guessing because something heats up(?)

If it would sound louder throughout the whole rpm range I wouldn't even ask this question but because it's only below 2.5k or so, it has me mystified. Did any of you guys ever have a similar problem or heard of anything like that?

Muffler has an internal valve that is closed at low speed and causes higher exhaust backpressure (less noise) and opens at higher speeds for better engine performance. Sounds like your valve is stuck open. Looks to be non-serviceable.

good luck

By non-serviceable I guess you mean the muffler has to be changed, right? If so, is the only downside the noise or are there any other negative effects? I've also no idea how much mufflers cost, could you give me a rough price range for a stock muffler and how much do people charge to install one.

Hey I replaced my muffler for the same sound. I was told around 700 bux from the dealership. I bought an arc welder and a 29 dollar "sound soultions" muffler. weleded it in 20 minutes. Total cost with EVERYTHING for the welder was 390 bux. Now I have a welder and anew muffler

get up underneath the car and look where the tail pipe meets the muffler. That is where a lot of holes end up.

Cool thanks man, I'll probably end up buying a cheap muffler and pay my mechanic to weld it in place.
