Question Free flowing T-stat?

Will it harm or damage my car if i remove my thermostat and have it free flowing?

no, but your car is never going to reach operating temperature, which means it will run rich and you will get poor gas mileage. It's there for a reason. Will it damage your car if you took out the radiator? how about removing a door?

Several good reasons for not removing the thermostat:

1) Fuel consumption will increase. MPG may drop 40-50% depending on driving habits.

2) Engine will never reach "closed loop" fuel control where O2 sensor measures fuel-O2 mix and adjusts for optimum fuel efficiency.

3) Because of 2) you won't pass any state emissions test.

4) Catalytic converter may be damaged by excess fuel in exhaust and be damaged.

5) Fuel will contaminate oil, reduce lubricity, leading to poor lubrication and accelerated engine wears.

6) Colder engine temps lead to reduced piston/cylinder tolerances and increased wear.

7) You won't be able to get warm heater flow in cold conditions.

I can't think of a good reason to remove your thermostat.

good luck

Thanks TexasHonda!

Just trying to find out why my car is over heating. Remove the t-stat and still over heating, so i put in back in. Next i plan on replacing the temp sensor.

What do you think TexasHonda or any other fellow members?

Are you losing coolant? Does the reservoir overflow at any time? Are you sure both cooling fans run when engine temp is high?

More info needed to help.

good luck

A crack in radiator prevents system from pressurizing. This leads to coolant boiling and loss to reservoir. New radiator should fix your problem.

good luck

Fleabay will have a to of aftermarket radiators. Some of them will be plug and play! Use only Honda coolant.

Just for everyone's information, i've seen a couple cars overheat worse when the theromstat was removed. The stat slows the water as it travels through the system. if the water is moving too quickly, it wont have time to be cooled by the radiator, and wont have time to cool the engine.
I dont see it happen very often, but it does happen.

Yeah i'm thinking it more my water pump than the radiator. I put some stop leak in it to see if that would help, nope not at all. I'm gonna still replace the radiator in the process. i just hope its not the head gaskit, if so i might just sell or trade the TL.

Don't put that crap in there. It will clog up heater core and radiator and replacing heater core isn't fun on these cars..
