Evap Control System

Hi... New to the boards but from what I've read, its a gold mine of good info.

I have a 98 2.5 TL and the check engine light recently came on. A local repair shop hook up a diag computer to it and the error is P0440 - Evap Control System. Initially he said to change the fuel tank cap as that is usually the problem. Did that and a few hundred miles later, the light hasn't turned off.

Has anyone experienced this before? What can I check? And is it costly to fix?

Thanks
J.

Ignore it.... Kidding, the check engine light goes off ALL the time on our cars, if you have a 96 or 97 TL, you qualify for a maintenance program by Acura, they will repair any issue free of charge to your TL dealing with emission control. If it is a 98, like mine, your out of luck, and just have to get a diagnostic check and hope for the best!

Common things that throw the light though, Gas cap, EGR valve, PCV valve, O2 Sensors, Exhaust leak, etc...

Good Luck Fellow TLer

I have a 99 TL and i have the same problem ..it says that its the "EVAP Emission Control System Leak Detected (Control Canister System" I replaced the gas cap lots of times and it still didnt help. Right now i am going to try and see if its covered under warranty.

you also can just disconnect your battery ,wait for 2min then plug it back ,then ur engine light will just reset. you wont see it but if when you drive for a few or more and it doesnt come back then it might of been a false sensor. if does try the canister side check for leaks. should be near the battery.

edit: p0440 reads- malfunction hose connections, intake leak, evap canister purge vavle

Is there a way to reset codes without dicsonnecting the battery? On my 4Runner you can pull the fuel injector fuse to reset. It doesn't kill all your radio settings, etc.

Like what's been said. The gas cap is the most likely cause of that code but since that's been raplaced you might have a break in one of the lines going from the gas tank to the charcoal canister.
