Engine noise and horrible gas mileage
Hi All,
I have a 96 2.5 TL with over 200,000 miles. The car has been kept up great, and I still change oil every 3000 and service it when needed. No problems other than the common annoyances mentioned in some of the above posts.
However, over the past month or so, i've noticed a relatively loud low rumble - noticeable over 30 miles an hour. It sounds as if the engine is revving high, but the rpm gauge reads totally normal. The gas pedal also feels less responsive. And it's more noticeable in the drivers seat than in the passenger seat...maybe this means something?
This is coupled with a 14-15 mile/gallon gas mileage. Granted I'm in stop and go traffic for at least 1/2 of my commute, but it seems a bit extreme.
Thanks for any and all advice!

start with the basics - plugs, filters etc. Have they been changed recently?
Is the engine setting a Check Engine Light?
Have you replaced the PCV valve lately?

I understand what you're talking about, i think i might be getting to that point or maybe i'm just too careful about my car, when i step on the gas it kinda hesitates before it moves, i wonder what could be causing that as its most definitely not normal, the rpm kinda goes up to 2 and then rapidly drops to 1 and works fine from then, but the pick up is becoming sluggish, this is the first time i've noticed this and want to know if y'all know anything about that...

Thanks for the quick replies.
To answer:
Check Engine Light: Not on
Filters: Replaced recently enough that I don't think they would be the problem
Plugs: I think they were replaced 30-40 thousand miles ago - possible culprit
PCV valve: I have no idea what this is - so a definite no on being changed recently
What have been replaced recently are the O2 and secondary O2 sensors, and an EGR valve.
I'll try swapping out the plugs and post again if the issue persists.
Thanks again

i hope that's not the case.. because i had it replaced a year or so ago.. it has an annoying dull rattle when accelerating..
however, its only when i am driving.. when the car is in park and i rev it up, its fine..
i am changing my midmounts this weekend.. we'll see how that goes..
