Car jolts from stop/idle

After a 45 minute ride down the highway, I noticed a serious problem. Whenever I am at complete stop and press the gas, the car won't move. In fact, if I'm on a hill, the car will go backwards, like that of a manual car. The thing is, I have an automatic transmission. The car will finally move if I press the gas to over 4000rpm. My guess is something is not making contact but since I'm not a mechanic, I have no idea. I drive a 98 Acura 2.5TL. Any ideas?

Your tranny is going out, but you should check the fluid level and do a drain and fill before considering replacing the transmission. Usually that solves the problem, but yours seems to be a bit worse than most members'.

Just an update which is leading me to think it has something to do with the electrical system.

I parked the car for an hour or so. When I restarted the car, everything worked fine. Now recalling some other problems, a weak heater fan completely shut off before the long 45 minute drive. Also, the left turn signal was blinking twice as fast as it usually does. My guess is that when the heater fan went, it messed with some of the electrical components. I am not a mechanic, like I stated before, but I am an IT and this is like a hard reset on any other electrical devices. For the time being, I will keep the heater fan off until I can afford a replacement.
