Acura 2.5TL blower motor

Hi,
I recently got a 1996 Acura 2.5TL. It has 127K miles on it. The AC/Heater fan is not blowing any air. I checked the fuse and relays, and they work good. After reading a lot on forums I think mostly Blower motor is dead. Has anybody ever replaced blower motor on this model. Is it possible to do it yourself or it has to be done at dealership or some shop.
I just hate the idea of spending another fortune on getting it done at dealership, although they havent given me a quote, but I dont think it will be inexpensive.
Can anyone guide me for this project or direct me to where I can get more information as how to do this

Thanks a lot

Use the self-diagnostic function of the Auto Climate Control to confirm a blower motor problem. Turn Key ON, and press Auto +OFF at same time. If the ON display appears in the LCD panel, blower motor is open or short circuit.

It could be something other than motor, perhaps the speed control circuit or damaged wiring, but bad motor is more likely. Have you checked for power to the fan motor connector. If power is available here, then motor is bad.

Removing the evaporator is required to remove the blower motor. This is a pretty big job for the 2.5TL. Not as bad as some US cars which require the dashboard to be removed, but does require removal of ECM, ABS control unit, and TCM.

First requirement for this job is to buy a Acura shop manual for your vehicle. I paid about $65 for mine, shortly after purchasing my 97 2.5TL. Best investment for DIY you can make.

Given the amount of work going into this repair, I would have to go w/ an OEM fan motor to insure you don't have to repeat this for a faulty remanufactured part. I had this happen on an Accord, which was easy to remove the blower module, but still a PIA to repeat a job.

good luck

Thanks TexasHonda,
I have been trying to look for the shop manual for a 96 2.5 TL, all over the net. There are lot of manuals which say service manuals but nothing that says Shop manual.
Can you tell me where did you get your manual from ? It would be really great to have one for DIY projects.
Thanks for the reply

I'm sorry, I misread the table of faults. OFF is the code for faulty blower motor or motor circuit. You should confirm that power is delivered to the motor connector before replacing the motor, given the level of effort required.

I went to the dealer to do a diagnostic. He said blower motor is bad and needs replacement. He is charging me 805$ for the whole job, including the motor. He is giving some employee discounts, since I recently purchased car from him. Labor is about 600$s approx 10 hrs. I am waiting on the shop manual to come in mail, and see how much effort and time it will take to do the job.
I just hope its not too bad and is manageable to do at home

TexasHonda,
I got the manual from Helm Inc. To replace blower motor, i have remove evaporator. To remove evaporator they say I need to discharge AC ( need to remove refrigrant). How can I do it. Can I do it at home or do I need to take it to some autoshop ?

Thanks

Technically, it is illegal to discharge refrigerant to the atmosphere, but it is done frequently. R134a is pretty costly these days, so value of refrigerant might justify paying someone to recover, but I doubt it.

When refrigerant is discharged be sure to plug or cap the lines w/ something to prevent free exchange of air and moisture. This will prevent having to replace the receiver/drier.

You can reinstall the evaporator, and then take car to someone to vacuum and recharge w/ correct amount of R134a.

If you want to buy tools to do your own recharging, check following site for guidance. Learning AC repair is a skill that pays a lifetime of benefit.

Do I have to discharge the system. I thought in manual they mentioned that process since it further led to overhall the evaporator. But if I am not going to do anything with evaporator, do I still have to do it ?

thanks

Yes, evaporator has to be removed. It can be removed unless the connections are broken, which means system must be discharged. It doesn't look to be a terrible job, but certainly will require patience. Take your time.

Hi,
I removed the glove box on the car. I removed 3 screws holding the frame for ABS. The 4th screw which is upper left corner is not accessible to remove. I think a frame holding the Airbag is there.
I want to check the voltage across the connector for blower motor, thats why i want to get an acess to it. Is there any particular reason to remove the ECM. Since its sitting on the floor side, and everything regarding the blower motor is under dash, why would you want to remove the ECM. I know the manual says to remove it, I am just curious, how it will help in removal of blower motor etc.
Currently I am stuck on removing the 4th screw for mounting bracket of ABS, once I remove that I will be able to check the connectors. Also I am going to check the relays, tommorow to make sure they are working. If you know how remove the 4th scres(upper left hand side) please let me know.

Thanks

I recently removed the ABS controller support frame to access on transmission control wiring. I had to use a flex extension on LH side and short extension on 1/4" ratchet on the RH side to reach the upper screws, but had not other problems.

Regarding the ECU, it may be necessary to remove to provide a removal access path. That is the case for 90-93 Accord blower module, which also has ECU mounted on the floor. You might wait to see if it's necessary. It can probably be removed at any time if necessary.

good luck

Hi,
Finally I was able to work on my car, after a long time of bad weather. I removed, ABS module, TCM all wiring harness on the passenger side. Now I stuck on the pipe cover removal. I was able to get off the 3 screws for the pipe cover. The manual shows the wire harness clips are to be removed. I was able to cut one of the zip ties, but was not able to get acess or even see the second wire harness clip. I am stuck over there, I am not able to get that pipe cover off. if you can help in anyways to direct me how to remove pipe cover it will be awesome,

Thanks

I see where you are in the shop manual, but can't see how the clips hold the pipe cover in place. It looks like they might be under the cover if anything. Are these the type of harness clip that simply snaps into a hole? If yes, they usually pry out w/ a screwdriver,...if you can reach them.

This is where a dab of experience is worth plenty. Sorry I don't have any to give.

good luck

btw.
I was trying to get the wire clip snipped off from the pipe cover of my acura. Althouth I was not able to get acess to it, I must have hit blower motor in some way, coz I switched on the blower motor and it started working. I donot know what I did I wish I know what I did, but it did start working. Now I am trying to decide what to do, whether to go ahead and replace the motor or keep the current one. I hate to see the motor stop working after I put refrigrant back in.

Thanks

It's not unusual for a bump to cause a dead fan motor to start working. The problem w/ the motor is worn brushes which get so loose the springs don't push the brushes tightly against the commutator. Poor contact means no start of motor. However a bump can temporarily reseat the brushes adequately to get the motor to restart. When you reach that stage, the motor will usually fail to restart shortly. Bumping the motor to achieve a restart is actually a diagnosis procedure to confirm worn brushes.

I would go ahead w/ your repair.

good luck

ABSOLUTLY FINISH THE REPAIR. There is nothing worse than getting into your vehicle in the morning and beating the life out of your dash until one day the motor won't start at all.

I'm having the same prob, Man. I'll get into my car and NO blower action. I'll drive for 10 minutes or and hour and nothing. BUT...I'll take a drive way ramp a little fast or a corner or something and it kicks on! It's pissing me off like crazy!

I have been there too not a nice place be. Random fan appearances due to passenger door slams and yes the sharp turns; soon it will be dead.
