Transmission cooler?

I was just wondering if anyone here has ever installed one on their first gen spcifically. They aren't too expensive, and I don't think it would be a crazy hard install either, I was just looking for some guidance to it if possible, or any reasons why I shouldn't try it out. For keeping things cool

Hmm, forgot a link to one I had found to be looking at:

Probably go for: 130-70255. It's the cheapest one there, and I don't think anything too big is needed, just a small bit of added protection.

I've always wondered about transmission coolers if you do a lot of city driving. My car is getting lots of distance on it, so I wonder if it's worth it now to protect the transmission for many more years of reliable service. Heat is a transmission's biggest natural enemy. Does anyone know if tranny coolers are a BAD thing in the WINTER? Or do they only engage when the transmission gets warm?

Tranny coolers are useful if you are towing or REALLY stressing your engine (i.e. racing).

For our 1st gen cars, 99% of us dont need it.

if im not mistaken, theres a section in the radiator that already cools the atf. i've heard that in a cold winter, an atf cooler messes up your shifts. don't know how true that is though.

yeah i would have thought that a tranny cooler is on the side of the radiator.. i see it on my dad's car... but i haven't had to look in the TL.. i haven't had problems with the tranny as of yet.. but if i had a second gen, lord knows the trans cooler would be strapped on there.. with their tranny prob it prob won't even help

True, but if my ride runs as well as I think it will after it's all done, I MAY just need one. Have to kick a few Civic's in the rear once I prove the quickness of my car.

This may be irrelevant but am posting it anyway - a friend of mine has a 2nd gen TL (2000) and he recently received a letter from Acura concerning a recall on the transmission on his car. He dropped it off at the dealership for inspection... they did not find anything wrong with his tranny but they did install a transmission cooler in his car. After reading some of the posts in this forum, I do feel that even the first gen TLs may have delicate trannys - I've had my TL since the last 9 months (done almost 20K miles since) and it has 103K on it... haven't had any problems with the tranny but the shifting is a bit rough especially when I accelerate hard. Does anyone have any idea of the cost involved in getting a transmission cooler installed?
