Should I just replace my head unit?

While trying to track down my radio code, I had read some posts about the lack of quality in the OEM head unit ('96 3.2TL). So, though I continued to try to find the code, I went ahead and ordered this:

I also installed a pair of Pioneer 250w max 3-way 6x9's in the back deck; ever since I pulled these out of my totalled Beretta back in 2000, I've been waiting for them to fit in a car of mine!

I finally got my code and figured maybe I would just return the Sony deck and keep the stock unit if mine seemed to work OK. At first, I was pleasantly surprised - good power, good clarity and plenty of volume for my tastes (I'm sort of an ex-audiophile - I appreciate good music and sound, but no longer need a "system" in my car), so I figured the Sony was going back. However, after a little bit of playing, the CD began to skip, and it didn't sound like a "normal skip." Everyone's pretty familiar with how a CD skips - generally, it just gets stuck on one spot or hesitates but then just jumps to different part of the song. This was different. It was very erratic, sticking on some spots, then jumping, then skipping on another part, then jumping.... I checked the CD and did a quick "hoah" cleaning, though I didn't see any obvious spots on it. I figured I'd also invest in a cleaner for the player but I'm wondering if these signs sound like they're leading up to the failure that others have experienced.

The Sony should get delivered tomorrow - I figure I can:
1) just put it in - it's cooler than the stock deck and I'll have my MP3 capability
2) just return it right away - stock deck's probably OK; if not, can always reorder (paying shipping twice, though)
3) hold the Sony for as long as the return policy allows and monitor the stock unit.

Last note: I bought my TL so I WOULDN'T mod it. I'm trying to save some $$ as my second child just arrived. I can afford the new unit but need to make the most prudent decision (note that not having a CD player in my car crosses the line ). TIA!

Choice number 3 sounds best.

Let us know how it goes!

i say replace your head unit whenever possible. i was having a lot of problems with mine. Very very touchy and only worked when it wanted to. I always got that COPED bullshit for no reason. After looking on some fourms i relized that after a couple of years and a lot of use, they pretty much just shit the ber. i purchased a clarion touch screen. a little present to me for not having any kids to worry about i just installed that along that and a set of full components. 6X9's n rear, 6 1/4 n doors and tweets up front with an amp. WHAT A DIFFRENCE. everythig is clear and crisp. put on some les claypool and felt like i was watchn him on stage.(im sur the subs n the trunk helped that too)
