Problems Starting

i've been having problems starting my car everyday. it ususally doesn't start on the first crank, but it works on the second one. any suggestions as to why it does this? someone suggested that it's the fuel pump and that there might be something wrong or a leak in the hoses. i guess i'll get that checked out the next time i go into the dealership for maintinance. I just bought new NGK wires and hopefully they'll help a little bit. gosh this summer is bad for my car, so many things going wrong.

knowing the dealers they're just going to make me replace everything. but i'll slowly replace my ignition system with an aftermarket one so this way i can fix the problem and maybe get some performance out of it for the same price.

re: Problems Starting

My 96 2.5tl will sometimes turn over for 5 seconds or so before starting. It only happens once in a while and there is no pattern to it. The dealer says this is common for my engine. Has anyone experienced this?

this happened to me before. one time it was choking for awhile before it started and another time, it just didn't start at all! when that happened, i got someone to jump me and the problem was solved. I just recently bought a whole new battery but i plan on returning it since im getting some performance battery (optima) since im getting my system put in soon.

is optima the battery that is red (i think) and has a 6 spiral-looking design to it? if it is, i just read in consumer reports that it is actually not that great of a battery. it actually performed below average as compared to other similar type batteries.

Dirty intake mainifold, throttle body and incorrect spark plug gap will cause hard starting problem, first think to check is the spark plug gap, core on the plug will worn out in time.

Same thing happens to me. The engine will crank 4 or 5 times. After second attempt it will start on first crank. This is with a brand new dealer installed starter.
