oil
I use synthetic and only Mobil 1. Castrol Syntec is not real synthetic in my opinion.
For Houston, 10w-30 is ok. I don't know how long your oil change interval is, but winter is still a ways off. If your car is parked outside and you do a lot of early morning starts, I would recommend 5w-30. If you park inside a garage and don't leave until later in the day, no problem with 10w-30.

yup same here...
Mobil 5w-30 Synthetic Oil
yeah i read about Castrol not being truly a synthetic oil... someone posted it here somewhere I forgot who posted it. and there was a case: Mobil vs Castrol where Mobil sued Castrol for not being a "TRUE" synthetic. but in the end Castrol didn't get sued and that it was okay to say to have Castrol advertise there oil as synthetic even if it didn't have all the properties of being a "TRUE" synthetic oil.

I only use Valvoline Max Life Synthetic 5W-30 ever since I hit 75K miles. Before that, I only used Mobil 1 5W-30. The only reason I switched over to Valvoline is because of the Max Life product line specifically designed for cars with >75K miles. I use the Engine Treatment and the Gasoline treatment as well. It's cheap insurance for my baby that I want to keep another 75K miles.
regular oil usually valvoline or castrol before i usedto use pennzoil
5-30 in the winter or 0-30 if its really cold
10-30 in the summer
here are some synthetic oil facts:
synthetic oil is much thinner than conventional oil
if you accidentally use synthetic and try to switch back your going to have some interesting results
synthetic oil burns clean so you can never tell if you burning oil, great for a shitter car that smokes to get it through inspection just use synthetic oil
i am not into the whole synthetic thing because i do not abuse my car.
not saying that the only reason for synthetic. i will run syn. in my race car to see how it works.

I use synthetic not because I beat on the engine, but because I do so much driving I have to change my synthetic every 4 months.
If I used conventional oil, I would have to change every month and a half or so.

Castrol
I use Castrol 10w30 in the summer and 5w20 in the winter months. I don't use synthetic but don't oppose it. I know several mechanics and have talked to other shops and cannot justify synthetics because I very strictly change my oil every 3,000 miles. Also I have owned 4 Honda's and 2 Acura's, selling my last honda with 207,000 miles and it still don't use oil. For filters I use only factory, Nippon ( same thing as old style honda filter with old number ) Purolator 1, or Wix ( Same thing as NAPA GOLD )
I use 5W-30 all year long in my Explorer and since Wally World sell 5-quart jugs of Mobil 1 at $20, it's not a bad deal at all. I'll be switching to that in the Acura in a couple of thousand miles.
On a side note, which oil filter do you all recommend?

Fram, STP, or any other big brand is more than good enough if you change the filter everytime. If you want more security, you could get a Mobil 1 filter.
A word about dealer filters. They are almost all rebranded namebrand filters. I remember an article where they sliced up a Honda filter and it was identical to a Fram filter. The exception would be Ford's Motorcraft line, which I know are made by "Motocraft." But this doesn't exactly mean they are any better.
There was an oil starvation issue with Fram a long time ago among motorcycles, but if I recall correctly, it was during off-road use. Off-road bikes sometimes don't even run with air filters for that extra performance. The whole engine is ripped down after the race. I think this makes the supposed oil problems of the past with Fram a nonissue.
I would recommend though that you stay away from those filters that contain Teflon and such. That's just money going to waste.

Cool! Thanks. I'm leaning toward Purolator filters. I don't plan to change oil for 5000 to 7500 miles since I'll be using Mobil 1 oil.
Motorcraft is actually the same as the more expensive PureOne filter by Purolator. I've been using that for years on my Explorer and it's awesome. For $2.08 each, it's a good deal.

anyone here tried royal purple...
remember watching somethin on horsepower tv....they drained a last gen (199x - 2002) camaro and filled with royal purple synthetic oil in egine, also replaced tranny fluid and differential fluid with royal purple stuff. Made about 8 extra horses (not sure whether at rear wheels or at flywheel) - either way its an appreciable gain considering all u had to do was use different fluids. Was wondering whether any1 had that stuff in their tls.
I use Maxlife 5w-30...since mine has 116k....would it be o.k. to switch over to synthetic like mobil 1? any benefit at this point in tls life

Been using Mobile 1 since I bought the car, used Amsoil in my Integra. Have 196000 KMS on a WELL beat on motor. Car still runs mint. 10W30 in summer, 5W30 in Winter. I have heard horror stories of switching from synthetic to regular, but I have never heard of one from the horses mouth. I guess it could be true due to seal conditioning, etc, but I honestly think you should be able to change back and forth no problem.
