Need some guidance please!!!

Hello everyone.
I have a 97 3.2 TL and I have the feeling I am getting terrible gas milage. I was wondering to see if anyone else here could give me some input in reference to this.

I currently get about 220 miles on a full tank of gas. That includes both city and freeway driving. Give it also that I am not at all heavy on the foot and dont leave braking for last minute. Tires are up to appropriate tire pressure and original tire size, tune up is A-ok, and currently the car is completely stock.

So... is this good or bad mpg's?

Thanks in advance for your input on this.

full tank as in empty or to the light? Also A/C or no? and then there is the ever premium or no? To be honest though, I get around there to when the light goes on when mostly city, premium, and A/C. I drive a 97 3.2 as well. However I have heard others get a lot more than me, so I might need to get my car checked out too

I get about 300 miles before the light comes on. 98 3.2 A/C combo highway and city.

I dunno if your tune up guys did it, but check the air filter. That would be my first suspect.

i have a 98 3.2 TL highway/city/a/c and i get about 330 on a full...of course i drive 80-90mph on the highway and about 50 mi. a day. air intake would be the first thing to check, also i found that premium gas gets me more mileage for some reason. If i put in regular, i struggle to get 300, kinda weird but eh.

I was just told by the acura dealership that I need to change my egr valve and the oxygen sensors. They told me that I would not get very good gas mileage until I change it.

300 around town until the gas light comes on, 350 to 375 on the highway.

Hmmmm.... egr valve, oxygen sensors, and intake??? I guess I could give it a shot... sounds about right. Thanks for the tip on this.

Also a friend told me that the fuel filters could also be linked up to poor gas milage. Is that a fact or not? If so, then how?

In theory I would think that a clogged fuel filter would minimize the fuel flow going into the engine, therefore ultimately using/wasting less fuel. I could understand less performance per gas pedal pressure, but gas milage?

What do you guys think?

Oh... also... does anyone know where the location of the oxygen sensors is at?

Or better yet, is there an online manual available for download for the 3.2TL's?

I have been able to get one for the 1st gen Legend, and seen them for various generations of Accords, but not TL'S.

Thanks everyone!!!

You can see the Oxygen sensors in the following diagrams:
Front Oxygen Sensors:
http://www.acuraoemparts.com/delray/...All&vinsrch=no

Rear Oxygen Sensor:
http://www.acuraoemparts.com/delray/...All&vinsrch=no

I'm unaware of any online manuals for our cars, but you can get the original shop manula from:
http://www.helminc.com

Good luck!

Thanks for the diagrams!!!

However though... I also looked at the prices for the Oxygen Sensors... damn!!! $200+ a pop for each? 3 total? Thats over $600... possibly over or equal to 1/2 years gas bill consumption.

Those who have invested in it??? Has it really been worth it?

I might just go over to the junk yard and pull some O2 sensors off and give those a shot if those cars have less miles than mine. I should be able to get those for about $10 tops.

Not sure if it is covered under the epa warranty or not. I know the quote the dealership gave me was around $1,530. $880 for the sensors and $650 for the egr valve.

I was wondering if it was a good idea to just buy the part and have someone put them on?

Thanks for the site for the manual. I have looked online on how to order one with no luck.

Its covered under the EPA warranty if its a '96 or '97 model and under 150,000 miles.

There are some cheap ones out here:

I've no clue about how good/bad these are.

Yeah like Ken said, you are covered under a warranty until 150k miles for emmissions. That means 02 sensors and EGR valves.

I would think that youre best bet is to replace the air filter. Your engine needs to breathe to get the best milage.

And Ken dont you have a Legend type 2 port/polished head and throttle body? I think you have an advantage over 99% of the other 3.2 owners you get insane gas milage.

I can usually go about 320-345 before my gas light comes on in my 2.5 and thats a mix of highway city. I really need to clean the filter on my intake though

Wink

So the epa warranty does not apply to the 98 models at all?

It doesn't, but I persuaded Acura to pay for the parts when I had a cracked exhaust manifold.

Yup, Type II parts + port + polish and TB I still have Type I exhaust manifolds, I'm trying to figure out if that restricts power or not. I dont have ANY complaints though.

Part of my insane gas mileage is my Toyo Tires, they're low rolling resistance. Braking isnt quite as good as previous tires but.. I have upgraded brakes so it evens out

Me too I got 240-260 mpg combine city and freeway . And always use supreme as in chevron only. Maybe I need to change my egr. I got 1997 3.2 tl too. Why is that 1997's are gas monster?

Everyone please list what size wheels/tires you're using, that can knock off 5 mpg or more.

2.5 with stock 205/60-15 and i've never gotten better than 24 mpg and that was an entire highway trip with cruise at 75. my dad's '06 lex is a bigger car with a lot more power and he gets 30 mpg on the highway and not much less in the city. our cars are absolutely pathetic when it comes to gas mileage.

Keep in mind that 2006 Lex has a 5 or maybe even a 6 speed automatic. It makes a difference. You can gear down that torque!

Again, tire grip and rotational mass will suck power and therefore gas mileage.

2.5 with stock 206/60-15. I keep them inflated at 34psi. I think Acura recommends 30psi for the front and 29psi for the back tires.
