Hitting Fuel Cutoff

Our transmissions let us hit fuel cutoff. I've always found this to be strange, since the third gens don't let you do that, even in SS. Like if you go 1-2-3-4, you can bring the first 3 gears past the redline into the fuel cutoff. I've tried this a couple times (but it's not becoming a habit, fortunately), just to see if it could. I think it's a really cool feature, and I wonder why they didn't continue it?

to my knowledge, the 3rd gens will automatically upshift at redline, in 1st gear, but in the other gears will not.

I've wondered whether it was safe or not to0 hjit the fuel cutoff and have only used it once (against a Jetta 1.8T 5sp!) but it gives you approx an additional 350 revs to work with. Use it on my accord all the time though, to squeeze all the juice outta it.

In fully auto mode (at least in the 3.2) it will shift a bit early. This is good since the torque curve starts to end around that point anyway.

BUT.. if you put the car in 1st or 2nd gear manually, it will go to the fuel cutoff.

So, is doing that bad, shifting like a manual in the TL hitting fuel cutoff?

Hmm, well, it hits fuel cutoff to help keep you from hurting the engine much, but its not good to hit it consistantly I wouldn't think. Should shift right before it .

I wanna hit it in 4th I have in 3rd before, my girlfriend is gonna be getting a picture of my speedo up there in a couple weeks...

Fuel cutoff is at redline, right? Or is it dependent on the gear?

No, fuel cutoff is dependent on revs. If you rev to, say 6800 (the redline) it won't cut you off. It will shift if you are in normal D3 or D4 (or 2 even). But, if you start in 1, and hold the gas until about 7000RPM (200 past the redline) it will still go for about another 100 until the fuel injectors stop spraying. This is to prevent damage to the engine. If you leave it in D3 or D4, the car will shift at about 6600 or 6700 if you floor it to the end. I have a 2.5 TL. I think the 3.2 might have a different redline, but the concept is the same. And yes, it's bad to do it all the time.

You have a 2.5 like me right? You won't be able to hit it in 4th. Wind resistance will own you because you're already going too fast. I made it to 214km/h (about 125mi/h) and I still had a couple thousand revs to go.

WHOA, pushing the 3.2 another 550RPM will give that extra bit of power so you can hold the gear longer and kick ass accelerating. Sometimes I wish I had gotten the 3.2...
