HID Light

Hey guys, I got a friend who cant get access to a computer so I am doing the research for him.

He has a 1998 3.2TL, it looks as if it already has HID's in it. They are like very light shade of purple. Left side is out and now right side is starting to flicker.

I searched on here but everyone talks about H4's. I use to have a Mazda 626 that used H4 style bulb and they were regular bulbs.

What HID bulb could my friend have? I haven't taken out the bulb with him yet so I do not know.

Does he really have HID's? These cars came with HID's from stock also right?

The 1st gen TL did not have HID's stock. So whatever he has is aftermarket. Are you sure they're HID and not just some wannabe purple bulbs?

agreed. if its burnt, i believe you just need to buy an h4 bulb with a matching output color and the same kilowatts? if its purple'ish, im thinking its 8000k?

Purple-ish is 12000K. Anyhow, look for either a set of D2S or D2R bulbs, but first look under the hood and see if he has any ballasts for real HIDs. If he doesn't, just go buy a set of H4 bulbs. I use 8500K bulbs for a nicer white. BTW, change both out at the same time.

Thanks. I will take a look later on today. I am pretty sure they are HID's because you can tell when they turn on, they just turn on like a quick flash. Not like the regular ones that just have this little slow delay.

i think hid's have a slow delay? not too slow though. like if its been on for awhile and you turn it off and turn it back on, it will automatically go to the color. say if you turn it on for the 1st time of the day, it takes a few seconds to get the bulb to heat up and get to the color its suppose to emit. dont quote me on that

The initial burst is from the ballast igniting the arc. Then when the power stabilises, you get the intended colour temperature. If I remember correctly, the voltage required to form the arc is around 35,000 volts. Don't quote me on that either, hehe.
