Dash light burnt out...
Dash light burnt out...
I noticed the light which lights up the gear the car (96 2.5) is in has burnt out. The "D" for overdrive no longer lights up green. This is really bugging my g/f so I'm gonna fix it. I'm wondering how much work is involved getting the dash tore down to fix this, kind of bulb it takes, etc.. Has anyone done this before?
Thanks for any help.

You need directions? Here ya go.
1 - Remove the 2 screws on top under the dashboard lip that goes over the guages.
2 - Remove the 2 screws on each side of the steering wheel. Just lower the wheel all the way down and there are rubber flaps covering the screws.
3 - Gently pull out the whole piece that goes around the cluster. Don't be afraid to pull it but be gentle. Its connected to the AC vent on the drivers side and the hazard switch and clock. Be careful with the vent. You'll have to unplug the clock and hazard switch.
4 - Once you have that out there are 4 screws around the cluster. Take those out.
5 - Take out the cluster. Watch out because when you take it out the plastic over the guages scratches easily. You can put some masking tape over it to be safe. Also, be careful to not scratch the steering wheel column cover. You can tape that up also. The cluster barely fits through the hole so you have to manuever it a little bit.
6 - Look in the middle of the cluster and you'll see the skinny row of bulbs for the shifter. I didn't even go buy a new one. I just borrowed the D1 bulb since I never use it anyway.
7 - Put it all back together!

mine was burnt out too. i did it myself.. when you take out the plastic around the gauges, be careful not to break off those vent thingies (those horizontal flaps) from the main board. i broke mines off trying to take it out. i didn't buy a new bulb...i just replaced the d1 bulb with the d4

Not that it's any of your concern, but I'm far from whipped. My g/f does a lot for me, cars are my job to keep up on.
I'm sure from my few posts you can ascertain the details of my relationship .. thanks for sharing
But anyways, thanks again to 96TL and TLBaller for the how to on this again. Much appreciated and the problem is solved
