Brake System

Guys I just came back from my imechanic, and he charged me $460.00 (Canadian Funds) to replace both front and back brake pads and he also changed both the rear roters. The parts he used were aftermarket (he claimed that they were as good as the original acura and with less noise).

Was this a good deal? I know if I have gone to the Acura Dealer they would have charged me almost double. Suggestions??

i saw a pair of brembo slotted rotors for 2.5TL for a 100 bucks on ebay. so then front and rear should be close to 200. brake pads, i paid 65 bucks (axxis pads). so the total so far should be somewhere around 265 and im guessing the rest of the money he charged you was labor?! wow..

I think it was probobly just an off the cuff remark people make without realizing the true meaning of, unfortunately, a semi-commonly used phrase.

We are talking about Canadian Funds here not to mention 15% tax.

Here is the brake (no pun intended) down:

2 x Rear Rotors = $85 each
4 Brake pads = $65 each

Total = $430
Labour = $30

Gotta pay for luxury

According to many different cultures, Jewish people are very cheap. Therefore saying someone "jewed you" means they went cheap on you.

Hold back on the racial remarks, cause I'm jewish.

Hey...

I think TL typed this one too quick... brake pads comes in Pairs so it would be $130 for all 4 pads from Acura/Honda. I know TL and many who've purchased pads knows this but want to clarify just in case.

I remember checking rotor prices from the dealers a while back and they were pretty cheap... $75 each comes to mind

so lets just say $75 x 2 for the rears plus all pads at $130 = $280 for dealer parts which is about $500.00 CDN. Using aftermarket stuff would have cost less and not more. Unless the user/customer requests a certain aftermarket brand like Brembo's or Zimmermans or something. When repair shops say aftermarket, they do it due to availability and lower cost. No shops will install aftermarket parts that cost more than dealer parts since their Value Add is harder to pitch if the quoted price is higher than the dealer or same.

I remember seeing rear rotors for $40 and fronts about $50 for aftermarket and pads can be real cheap... down to $20 bucks but some cheapo pads makes noise. Trust me on this one... I've tossed out couple of organic pads I got from AutoZone from excess noise.

So parts could have been low as $120 USD for aftermarket to $280 USD for Honda/Acura parts. And rest was labor.

If he flushed the brakes and they bite well with no noise. Then it's a fair price since parts could be $120~$150 and labor was about $150~$180.

You could have always done them your self however if you choose to take it to someone then of course there is a price.

As long as they dont squeak and bite well since we dont know what parts he used or if he flushed/bled or not... lets say he did the job right then it's a fair price.

I just had to pony up $379 including tax for full brake service. That was $120 for pads, about $28 in tax, and about $230 in labor. I see alot of brake ads for $99.00, but I trust the guy I go to. I was gonna try to do it myself, but **** it, he can do it in 2-3 hours (pads, polish rotors, bleed lines, ect). It would take me that long just to change the pads.
Anyway I saw someone else who paid out about that much and its not overpriced. I just took my wifes rodeo in today to a closer shop where she has gone for a while and they charged $329, but used different pads.
If you go cheap ie to "just breaks" or minekee thinking you will get the $99 deal for pads and all the stuff they list, think again. I almost went there on my Acura, then talked to about half a dozen people and each got a call back saying that their car needed new rotors or drums.
Sorry, Im just venting because I spent $700.00 on brakes in the last 3 days. I could have gone to cancunn on that dammit.
