Anyone here had MAJOR problems with their car?

If so list 'em and year your vehicle is, engine and how many miles.

I read all the time about blown trannies in 2nd gen forum, sagging headliner in the 3rd gen.

In comparison our 1st gens seem bulletproof. Just wondering if thats true.

As for me.. I've only had the starter replaced.

Ya our cars seem to hold up pretty good. I wanted a 2nd Gen not too long ago, but I heard about the tranny thing, so it scared me off. I love the 1st Gen anyway. Only prob I had so far, is my radiator went bad.

When you say headliner you mean the cloth on the interior ceiling?

I'd hardly call that a major problem. Maybe an annoying nuisance.

But I see what you mean about it being a recurring issue.

Yeah, its stupid that a brand new car costing well over $30,000 would have that but its a problem.

As for me, the interior has always been perfect.

I cant stop myself, I gotta this, this would be a recurring problem - DAMN D4 LIGHT!

No major problems here...cept for routine maintainence, its been smooth sailing.

I would call the headliner a serious problem. The D4 light though, not serious, its a bulb, and bulbs are bound to burn out, its in their nature. It's easy to fix too, which is a plus.

What about cracked exhaust manifolds? I would call that major.

I only had problems with the brake system. The ABS accumulator was replaced then the master cylinder. The master cylinder was replaced because the owner beforehand didn't do the proper maintenance. I have no clue why the accumulator was bad though. All in all, the cost came to about $900 to fix.

How much would that manifold cost if you warranty didn't cover it?

1998 Acura 2.5 TL 172,000 present miles

1. When i got the car... 80,000 miles the first thing that happened within the week was my brakes started squeeking... the little metal clip cracked in half and made the squeek... Cost $700-$800 dollars front and back brakes fully replaced OEM from Midias.

2. 1,000 to 2,000 miles into my purchase my exhaust manifold started slightly leaking... estimated cost of repair+labor $1,000 to $2,000... still not fixed... waiting for an income increase to get a custom weapon-r full exhaust...
Note: Took it to repair shop and they said it was the intake... cost me $300 to $400 for that mistake...

3. Air Conditioning (Idler) froze up on me... took out the AC belt... Bearings $25, Belt $10 total cost: $35... but i changed all my belts while i was at it so... it was about $80 and a days work...

Those are the majors... the rest are posted here... just minor things that have been wrong with my TL... click here...

Major Problems (I had written a funnier comment before but IE just crashed and I lost my whole post and don't feel like typing it again!!! :P)

1. NEW MOTOR ( COmmon problem on Legends with our motor, but not NORMALLY associated with the TL ( Head Gasket/Coolant issue)

2. New Rad - changing with new motor

3. Rear Bearing both changed under ext. warranty can't remember TSB #

Other than that we all know how solid our cars are!! I wish the new ones would go back to being made in Japan, but oh well. ( I know I'll get bashed on that one but it's the truth!! Ever since they started making cars in N.A. honda quality/reliability (or at least their PERCEIVED quality) has gone downhill.

Hey TLX, how big was the shot of NOS Silly me sort of wants to try it out...

And the CD player, what was wrong with it? I know mine gets the CD-PE0 error on burnt/dirty CDs but I can't imagine that it would be under waranty/recall.

Those bum CD players seem to be a recurring problem with our cars. I've had to replace mine once already.

My car was over heating occasionally, turned out to be a "sticking" T-stat. Got it replaced and did a coolant flush for good measure. $177 for that. Had to replace my brakes at like 50k miles, but that was worn pads, nothing defective or "wrong" though. Had to get a new 02 sensor too. The warranty doesn't cover 98's :P.

'98 2.5 TL 71,XXX miles.

Other than that, its rock solid! Hope it'll stay that way for a long long time. Im keeping this car forever.

the only major thing i can think of is that my radiator had to be replaced, there were a few cracks at the top on the plastic. other than that, the d4 light, passenger air vent cover thingy(idk what its called)is broken(it came like that), and my seat controls work half the time, but thats not a big deal. its been good for the past year, and i hope it stays that way

The worst thing that happened to me was my outer C/V boots cracked in extreme cold weather. Replacement cost (parts + labour) at the dealer was $400 + 7% tax. Then, my rear brakes were worn out. $80 for new pads and rotor resurfacing. Not a major problem, just maintenance. Then last month my A/C pulley started making annoying loud squeaking constantly. Had it replaced for $180. By the way, these are canadian dollar prices. This car is rock solid though. Mine is a '96 2.5TL with 182500km on it (or 114000mi). Feels like it's new.
