1996 2.5 TL - CD error code & stereo removal?

Posted this on the other forum, but, thought I'd try here as well.
Just bought a '96 base model 2.5 TL with factory stereo and single in-dash CD. Radio and cassette work fine, but, when I insert a CD, I get the following error code on the screen: CD PE0
According to page 96 of the owners manual that means either:
1-Focus/CLV error
2-data read error
3-search error

Acura dealer pulled the battery to try a simple reset error, but, didn't fix it. They then told me to take it to a stereo shop who indicated pulling the unit a giving it a major cleaning would likely fix it. I had tried a slide-in CD lens cleaner which had no effect.

Have others here had this same problem and how did they fix it?

If I have to pull the head unit, can anyone give me a link to a picture tutorial?

Thanks,

I can appreciate your lack of enthusiasm for the factory unit, but, I'd still like to know if anyone had that error message and managed to fix it

and

how do I remove the factory unit from the dash?

I get that message. What happens w/ me is that any time it rains or their is high humitity, or a dramatic change in temperature in a short period of time, the cd player wont work. Other times, if I put in a CDRW it'll say that as well. As far as fixing it goes...dunno what to tell you. I just wait like 10 minutes and try the cd again. Once I get it working I usually use my CD lens cleaner and that helps for a little bit. It happens to me so frequently that I just bought a whole new headunit, like everyone else said.

P.S. Anyone installed their aftermarket headunit themselves? I am pretty good w/ fixing things and experimenting with my car so I dont think it'll be that hard for me. I need to get an install kit though...

I usually only get that CD play error if I'm trying to play a burned CD. Try using a good brand of CD-R like Memorex or Sony and you shouldn't have any problems. I got 100 Imation ones for free, but none of them would play in my stock CD player.

I'm using high quality, store bought, prerecorded CD's that have played fine in other CD players, so I don't believe the problem is with the CD's. I've also tried it numerous times and the same error code comes up every single time.
As soon as I put the CD in the slot, I get a flashing "0" on the screen and then the CD PE0 message. The CD then self ejects.

I realize all of you are suggesting replacing the entire unit, but, I don't wish to do that at this time. If I can't fix it easily, I'll just have to leave it, so, if anyone has any repair ideas that would be very helpful and I would still like to know what steps are required to remove the unit from the dashboard to inspect it.
