Check engine light is on.....

My check engine light is on I took it to my mechanic and he ran a diagnostic test on it he said that the code is P0401 EGR air take flow and that my intake manifold needs to be removed and egr port cleaned out + $420. Anyone familiar with this issue?

Yep, that sounds about right. The 1st gen RL at high mileage tends to always get its EGR pipe clogged up and a good cleaning requires taking apart the intake manifold... That cost is right in the ball park.

That sounds correct. I needed it at about 165k miles. Should be good for another 150k anyway. Some very useful info here:

If you don't want to spend that much money, get another egr pipe. Swap out the old one and put in the new pipe. This will only last you about a year or so and the cel light will come back on. Clean the old egr pipe really good and save it for next year lol. This way you don't have to wait to clean out the pipe and put it back on. I did this method an it only take me 30-45mins if I have the right tool.

Ideally taking the intake off the car is the way to fix it....but its a hell of a job just to clean out the pipe and intake. I like the idea of swappin out the pipe...depends how bad the intake is and full of carbon.
