94-04 RL is a clunker!!!!????

I just realized that my previously owned 04 RL which I traded in this December is rated for a combined 18mpg accoding the government. According to Uncle Obama, this classy machine is considered a "clunker"! This means that 96-04 RL's traded in under the cash for clunkers deal will be sent to a scrap yard How could they destroy such a wonderful car?????

Sorry about the typo... 96-04. I checked the gas mileage on the government site.... 18 mpg combined, 16 city, 22 highway. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/19710.shtml

When that window sticker was printed the 18MPG City/24MPG HWY ratings were valid. The government has since developed a new system for determining mpg ratings. The new rating for the RL is in fact 16MPG City and 22MPG HWY. You can find the old and new mpg ratings at:

really?
that kinda odd cause normal driving on my RL gets me 18 mpg constantly and the ac is always on too.

i recently took a trip and with my wife driving on the highway stopping like every 45 min and accell and decell like crazy it still got 22 mpg. I know it would have gotten more if we would have traveled without stopping snd just det te cruise n let it go.

it is ashame that it does qualify for the clunkers program though i guess. Wasnt the RL a low emissions vihicle though? how would that effect it?

oh I forgot to mention that my RL is my family car so its always loaded with me, wife, and 3 kids. plus on top of that its on 19" rims with 245/35 rubber which weighs a good 10lbs a wheel more than stock.

so yeah the governments new mpg calculating standards seem a little off. well at least to our real world calcs.

I agree that the government numbers are bogus. I would average between 21-23 mpg when driving my 04 RL.

Gov numbers are based on averages. Some may get better mileage, some worse. I have had my 2000rl for 3 years now and consistently average 15-16mpg in city driving. Took a trip to Pensacola, FL and averaged a consistent 22mpg at 80mph with cruise or off. Interesting point though is when driving in country settings (long stretches with minimal stop signs and averaging 40-50mph I can get 25mpg.) Still got to remember this is a 6 cyl moving almost 4,000 lbs of car. I have no complaints. I have just hit 90k miles and am having some schedule maintenance done. I will also be having the spark plugs replaced. Will see if replacing 9 year old plugs make a difference on mpg.

I get 16 - 18 MPG around town. On highways trips greater than 30 miles I get between 22 - 25. 1G RL uses an old (non vtec) design V6, weighs 4000ld and has 4 spd transmission so it limits the mileage as an overdrive is not available. Co-incidentaly it is most efficent in typical back roads (45 - 55 MPH) than on the Freeway (65 - 75 MPH).

Not necessarily, depends where it's traded in and who gets a hold of it before the gov't.
