Today the "Check Brake System" message came on randomly while driving. The brakes were not applied at the time. After stopping and turning off the engine, removing the key, and then restarting the engine, the message disappeared.
I checked with a code scanner and no codes.
This is the first time I have experienced this. Does anyone know how to deal with this?

check brake fluid level, if the car is under warranty go to a dealer

 

It's also butt cold outside, so your fluid might be more viscous which could be setting off the light.
I had the same issue, but brakes were fine, so I'm going to assume this until it's warmer (like warmer than -17) outside.

 

This same thing happens to me when it gets below zero. Always clears after driving

 

I've had the same thing. Check code at about -10 degrees in the morning twice, no code when it was warmer later. I am curious if anyone knows or has an educated guess at what's actually going on. Is there something happening with the fluid/system or is it just that the sensor doesn't like the cold?

 

Lol this just happened to me a few days ago exact scenario but after I got in the car the next day it started up just fine with out any pesky messages appearing

 

It is always a good idea to check the brake fluid, but this message is not related to the brake fluid -- it is related to brake vacuum.

The RDX has an electric vacuum pump that backs up the engine driven vacuum to the brake booster. This pump normally comes on in cold temps or when engine driven vacuum is low. The "Check Brake System" message indicates there is a problem with the electric vacuum pump system. It could be a leak, poor connections, or the pump may not be working right.

It does record a fault code and the code can be retrieved with an HDS.

 

The message only happened once and in negative temperatures as others have reported. We have not noticed it or any brake problems since...I guess just an annoying unnecessary warning.

 

I've had the same issue/message for the past couple winters, in really cold weather. i'm finally going to be bringing it in to the dealer once it warms a bit outside. Does anyone know what the codes are related to the vacuum pump for this issue?

 

There are 13 fault codes for the brake vacuum pump system; they vary from leaks to bad relays to bad pump, etc.

Read the code with an HDS and it will direct you to the problem and further troubleshooting and repair.

If you post the code, I'll look it up, along with the repair procedure.

 

Same thing happened here. 2011 RDX SH-AWD. Temperature was -19 Celsius (-2.2F). Restarted it 3 times in 20 minute intervals and the light did not go away. Car was fully warmed. It has been parked in garage warming up. I'll scan for codes soon.

 

The code that came up on the nav screen when the indicator came on the first time was P0556. I haven't seen the warning on the nav screen in subsequent occurrences. That only came up once. The rest of the time the light on the dash console only comes on.

 

Same thing happened here. 2011 rdx sh awd. Just bought this thing used w 18k miles. I've had some issues w this car. Is this more of what's to come? So far I've had starter replaced, door sensor replaced, now this wtf

At least you have a warranty. All my TSB problems happened just after warranty or I didn't know there was a TSB so I never got it fixed

 

experienced this as well, mine would happen almost weekly though in between a shift it would buck a little and the check brake system message would pop up, turn off and back on it would go away... my solution ended up being a recalibration of some yaw sensor, i've messed around with the menus through the nav system and i vaguely remember coming across it, so it may be something you can do yourself- not positive though. basically the sensor, not being calibrated correctly, would trigger the vsa to kick in

 

I recently got the same amber brake system light while driving, but the temp is 80F. Brake fluid between min and max. Normal brake feel. After turning the engine back on, it went away. The dealer said to just monitor it.
So it seems to be common, but not a major issue.

2007 base RDX, 110K.

 

@stathis - I know this is an old thread, but the exact same thing happened to me. Outside temp was 80+. Curious what your outcome was or if anyone else had this issue. Error code on '08 RDX with the Tech Package was P15BB
