Replacement Keys

Has anyone here had to buy a replacement key for their RDX? My coat, along with the keys in the pocket, was stolen at they gym the other day. (I had to nervously check that the car was still in the lot). So now I am down to one set, and have to buy a new one. Also wondering if I should get the car re-keyed, as I continue going to that gym. Thoughts anyone?

Maybe someone took your coat by accident and will return it? I'd hold off a few days.

You should be able to get a replacement key from the dealer. No idea what the cost will be.

I personally would at the very least get the FOB reset. At least the person with your keys just can't test it out in the parking lot. But mind you, there may not be that many RDXs to stick a key into and try.

I'm sure re-keying the vehicle would be very expensive.

At a minimum, you need to de-register the remotes and re-register the remotes you still have and the new one you buy. I don't think the RDX key is very expensive. I think it was like $35 or so for a blank. Getting the dealer to laser cut it might be another story though....

I purchased an additional valet key at the dealer for $36.50 (not the switch key). Good chance the charge would be significantly higher if they had to program all of your keys to a new code.

You can program the remotes yourself for free. A blank key/remote is $45. Not sure how much they would charge you to cut the key though.

Re-keying the vehicle would be very expensive. Probably about $600 not including labor for the ignition, front doors, center console, and glove compartment plus new keys.

I'll bite. How do you program the remotes yourself? Does this method apply to a valet key without a remote?

I don't remember the exact instructions, but you have to clear all the remote from your vehicle and then reregister the remotes you still have.

Obviously you can't program a remote for a valet ket without a remote. If you are referring to the immobilizer chip, the dealer programs that on the key when they cut it.

searching for accessories on ebay I came across this...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-200...20767241QQrdZ1

I don't know if it's more expensive to get a set at the dealer or not...

Good luck.

why would you want one that is "pre-cut"...means you would need to replace the key portion...is this possible and cheap to do?

You're right...What if the keys up for sale are stolen????!!!

Not worth the hassle...best to go to the dealership and see what options they suggest. I just thought it was weird that keys were being sold on ebay.

To replace the key portion you'd have to order a new remote and key set. Defeats the purpose of that.

The only reason I can see to purchase those on ebay is if you wanted to use the remote for something else. Like on the TSX forum I know they were converting their standard keys to this switchblade style key and they were ordering the remote/key, and replacing the key with their TSX key.

I just ordered a new key (intergrated keyless entry) and I was quoted somewhere around $100. I haven't picked it up yet though.
