Climate control

When I read about the tech package's GPS-linked climate control system, my first thought was that it seemed much too clever to actually work. If you've got thermometers measuring inside and outside temp and a photosensor to measure sunlight coming in, I'd think the system would have enough information to control the temperature. I'd also think that information like where the sun should be based on location and season could only throw the system off, especially if the weather is unseasonal (like 80 degrees in October).

Sometimes I think that after designing in all the tech goodies, Acura found some excess computer capacity sitting around and just had to do something with it (Hey, guys! How about linking the climate control to the GPS system? Wow! Yeah! Cool!)

And now that I have a tech RDX, I find that I'm fiddling with the temperature pretty often to be comfortable, whereas in my previous cars, I hardly ever had to change the setting at all.

Anyone else notice this?

Yes I do for instance, it can be 55 degrees out in northern va and the interior temp fells about 70 degrees and all is well. I will change direction im heading be it an exit ramp and as soon as the sun hits the sencor it turns the ac on full blast bring the capin to what feels like 60 degrees. Now I am freezing so I turn it up to 74-76 to heat it back up. It is a cycle that is more prone in like you stated these unusual fall days.

I stopped using Auto on day 1

It's because you have it on Auto....but to get it off auto can be tricky!

The only way I figured out how to NOT get the AC to come on - even though Auto was not selected, was to push the AC button until the AC OFF showed up in the area up at the windshield.

As soon as I did this, all was well and I wasn't freezing anymore.

I kept the temp and life is good - well, until we get an our nice sunny afternoons, but hey, in Seattle, I'm okay with turning down the temp for some extra sunshine in October!!!

Besides, why use the AC if you don't need to?

I could see using this as you drove across country and the sun blasted you...like when I drove to Detriot over Labor Day. It would have been nice to have the car keep us nice and comfy across those long states...but then what would I have done to stay awake???

OK, I seem to be missing something here.

Is it not the entire point of having a climate control system that you set the temp and let the car do the rest? Shouldn't the system pick the fan speed and air outlets as appropriate to maintain a constant temperature? That was the way it worked on my previous two cars.

Why shouldn't the system be on auto? And why on auto do I need to fiddle with the temperature to stay comfortable?

Like I said, I must be missing some fine point of CC operation.

schuchmn, I'm with you on this. I always keep my climate control on auto. . . why not, right? As far as what you said, Amy, it sounds like you have the vent on and not the compressor that makes the air cold. It's nice that your climate allows you to keep the A/C off, but everyone isn't so lucky.

Anyway, I was initially skeptical of the GPS integration, too, and am curious if any other RDX owners have noticed this; shouldn't there be a way to disable the GPS intervention?

Right, that's the way a climate control system is intended to work -- you can override any of the system's choices -- A/C on or off, fan speed, outlets, etc.

But why on Auto am I not getting a constant temperature? It feels too warm as often as it feels too cool so it's not just an A/C issue. Is it just the overly-clever GPS-linked climate control or am I doing something wrong?

Consider this as well.

I know that I can go into "semi-auto" mode by changing any of the system parameters by hand. But if I take control of, say, the fan speed to be comfortable and if the temperature actually does change, the system won't be able to adjust the fan to match the new conditions. Which is exactly what a climate control system is supposed to do.

??????????????????????

The RDX is not the first vehicle to have the solar-sensing GPS linked climate control. The RL has it and I believe the 06 MDX has it as well.

okay, now i get ur point... and i get what u mean... on my tsx... auto... seemed wayy too powerfull.... it felt like more of a blast of cold air then at fan speed 5...

but rdx... i havent really been able to try auto yet... been needing a bit of heat in NY haha

OK, so is my system acting stangely or do they all behave the way mine does?

The tl and tsx with navi have it as well. They all act the same when the sun hits the sensor. I think there is nothing wrong with yours just depends on time of year and where the sun is. My dog likes it cold so he is happy with the way the system performs.

I like it cold, too. But about half the time it's too warm.

I'd bring it in to the dealer and have it looked at. There may be something wrong with yours. Let us know what they say if you do go that route.

Actually I don't think the manual says anything about the GPS-linked climate control. I have only seen it mentioned in Acura marketing material. Unless it is in the navigation manual which I don't have with me....
