Where could my coolant be going?

hi Acurazine

first off my 2.2 CL has 167k on the odometer and its automatic

lately I've been noticing that my coolant has been disappearing.

I fill it up to the brim of the radiator neck, and check back in about a week and its back down again. I would say I have to add in about half a quart each time.

is my coolant disappearing somewhere?

no coolant in the oil, no leaking present, and no white smoke in the exhaust.

any of you have a clue what could be going on?

headgasket is blown, check for bubbles/ milky residue under your oil cap.
mine is blown but doesnt have white smoke coming out the pipe and i cant really smell the coolant burning and the radiator and hoses are brand new.

check everywhere for leaks. With your hoses being that old, check for cracks.

It could be a headgasket, but a leak much more likely. Check heater hoses, both radiator hoses, and the coolant lines to the throttle body. Small leaks can be tough to find.

good luck

Sounds more like a leak, are you burning coolant? Do you smell a sweet maple syrup smell, and is there any white smoke coming from your engine bay? My guess is a coolant leak, otherwise, check your oil to see if there's coolant in there, but sounds more like a leak

thanks for the responses all.

almost positive its not a blown headgasket, because theres definitely no "chocolate milk" oil on the oil cap

I'll check for leaks.

Absence of water in the oil does not rule out the head gasket as source of loss of coolant. It may be leaking coolant into combustion chamber and flashing away as steam. Any missing on startup which quickly clears is an indicator of slow leak into combustion chamber. I had this happen on my 94EX in 2006. No coolant in oil or oil in coolant, only intermittent missing on startup that did not respond to "stop-leak".

good luck
