Sudden "power loss" while driving.

Hey guys,

in the last couple of days my car has been acting up (3.0CL)

for a few days i've had issues starting it up..

I would turn the car over, and the starter would work fine, but then the car would almost instantly die out. It wouldnt happen every time i start the car though.. Usually just giving her some gas / raising the rpm while starting it and then shifting into gear w a bit higher rpm managed to get her going.. (ive had this issue once in a blue moon before)

yesterday as i was driving home the car just blipped for a second, my tach and spedo went to 0 while i was driving, and i lost what seemed to be cabin lighting and engine power, then a second later everything came back

since it was really fast i didnt think too too much of it..

but today i was driving an extended highway trip.. and it did the same thing as i was going 80mph! scary! and it happened about 3 times for a few seconds each time.. (as i was trying to get somewhere safe).. then as i got into a quiet area, it did it again at almost idle, i was at a light, turned the car off, and turned it back on, and it worked fine for the next hour as i limped/drove it home..

the oddest part is the car, when shes working, is totally fine, i have no problems with the engine or transmission or anything else.. it just seems to be some kind of electric problem? ... its almost like my car gets hit with an EMP blast and then comes back to life.

I ran this by a couple of mechanics and they have not heard of something similar. I dont wanna pay an arm and a leg for exploratory mechanical work if possible. =\

Help/advise would be appreciated.

I just got my '07 TL Type - S back from the dealer for doing the same thing. They had it there all day and found nothing. I thought it was the alternator too, but they checked everything out and said it was fine. Did you find out what was wrong?

You may just wanna check the battery cables and make sure they're tight. If they're loose, they can cause intermittent issues like this. But, if they're nice and tight, probably just get the battery and alternator checked out at a local parts store. after that, its on to expensive electrical diag.

Could be numerous things. Here are things that come to mind with power loss.

My TL had a Throttle Position Sensor issue that caused it to power loss and limp mode.

Alternator

Battery Connections being loose.

Throttle Body needing replaced.

Finally, Blown Head Gasket.

reviving old thread, ive kinda let this sit for a while

i suspect it may be the ignition switch..

this video shows a similar problem

my car will turn off while not accelerating and if i quickly flick the ignition forward it will turn back on , the engine anyways, the stereo and lights and stuff never turn off..

also if im stopped at a light or something, it will just die , ill have to put it in park, and it wont start up unless im giving it some gas in park and then shift into gear with the revs up..

the car has a fairly new alternator, less than 2 years old
battery leads and positive terminal is a stinger digital volt displaying terminal (upgrade)

I saw that recall too . . .this issue was traced directly to the ignition switch. Remember, that's why it stays in the run position when you turn the car on, to keep the ignition circuits powered for engine controls, etc.

power loss

I have had the same problem in a 97 3.0 CL quite a few times over a short time; the times it cut out were longer than yours.
It turned out to be that the positive cable was completely corroded.
That seems to have corrected the problem for the most part but I have had brief cut outs since then.
