OKAY so my 1997 cl is again giving me a problem my rpms are puling i will start my car and it will start rising up to 2 and down to 1 and then when i drive and stop it will go to 3 rpms and drop to 2 idk whats going on my cl is a mess at the momment (LEMON) please help me if you know whats wrong

 

Sounds like your EGR valve and or port is clogged. Is it throwing a Check engine light? There is a code for EGR insufficient flow if that's the case. That's the only thing I know of that has that symptom.

The exhaust gas recirculation valve is not supposed to open until the vehicle is warmed up and is traveling over 45mph. It allows inert (spent) air from the exhaust to flow into the intake, reducing the amount of oxygen that getting mixed with fuel. The mixture of exhaust gases that makes it the O2 sensor is rich. The O2 sensor then sends a signal to the computer to reduce the amount of fuel being sent to the injectors which results in better fuel economy....at least I think that is how it works. On cold start your o2 sensor would be getting a rich read anyways because it's cold and the engine needs more fuel. If you add in the EGR effect your engine might cut be trimming back the fuel too much and your idle might be jumping around due to the information coming from the O2 sensor. Is possible. Might also be Mass air flow sensor, TPS, Coolant temperature sensor. Can you have Autozone pull a code?
