is it my altenator?

after about half an hour of searching through old threads i think i have to buy a new altenator...

my baby is on the side of the road at the moment

i was driving down the road and out of nowhere i get the battery light. then after about 15 minutes of that light the abs light comes on. after another 20 or so minutes of driving my car is sputtering and all the lights are dimming and i managed to sputter into a neighborhood and stall in front of someones driveway... pushed my car out of the way and then went to auto zone to see what they say. he told me he was positive it was my altenator, but he has told me wrong on my last car sooo i was hoping to get a second opinion on here. there is a bit of corrosion on the power terminal but i dont know if it was enough to cause all of this.

btw i noticed a little whining sound before the light came on but thought i was low on some fluids so i took it in a got a oil change and topped off my fluids.

auto zone told me 200$ + a 50$ core charge for a new altenator and a wait of about a week.

anyone got an opinion on this before i run out and get a new alternator?

97 cl-p with 125000 miles on it.
after charging the battery all night i was able to put it back in and drive the car home but the battery light and abs light were both on.

there was still that whining sound coming from the left side of the engine.

Definately sounds like your alternator, and $315 is a good deal for a new alternator. Have them check your battery to make sure it's holding a charge while they're swappin your alternator out just to be sure, but definately sounds like your alternator, my alt left me on the side of the road when it went

Invest in a Digital Multi Meter, you can tell if its your alt so easily and save your self some hassle you can get a decent enough one from like radio shake for something like 30 bucks turn your car on and put both leads *on voltage measurment* on the terminals the negative to the negative the positive to the positive if you show under like 13.5 volts your alt is prob dead or dying, avg is around 14+ Volts after that you know there is either a problem with your wiring to the battery from the alt or with the alt it self, depending on your level on knowledge i can walk you through checking if there is a break and where but this is a quick way to let you check for the most part. If anyone knows something i missed let me know i think i got most of it

Bass'll do that to alternators, I killed mine 6 months after I took out the system that i had 2 systems ago, put in an optima yellow top and 3 farrad cap and took the pressure off the alternator

you can make sure if its your alternator by turning on the car and let it run. once its runs unplug the positive on the battery. it should stay on if the alternator is good. if it shuts off, time to replace it.

I had the same problem about a month ago. I have a 97 2.2 CL.. I thought it was the alternator so I got it tested at autozone. They said it was fine. So I got the battery tested. They said it was bad, so I replaced it. My ABS light was still on. While I'm driving the car dies again. It ended up being just a fuse...
