Warming Up the Car?

I just remembered back when i was like 5, my dad and I would always wash his car, and he'd explain the importance of 3 things that you need to do to cars:

1- Wash it...cars like to be clean
2- feed it... Gas and Oil
3- Warm it up... let it just chill in idle for a min. or two before you drive it off..

Do I really need to do the last one? Turn on the car, and let it just sit there, "warming up"....i mean, i plan on doing it nowadays, so the car is nice and warm when i get in it, and my hands dont freeze to the steering wheel, but does it help the car at all? (or does is just burn gas?)
Thx
David

From what I know, 40seconds or so is good enough for the engine to warm up. You really have to drive it to get everything warm up, for example, the suspension.

Yes, a minute or two is sufficent. Gets the oil in the engine up to the top of the motor and allows it to rain down on the internals for good lubrication. Same with the tranny. Running it longer than that just heats the oil up more, and thins it out a bit.

Every morning I let my car warm up for about 5 minutes is this excessive? It takes 5 minutes just to hit 750rpm it idles at 1500 for the first 3 minutes...

If U GUYZ read ur MANUALS

u would C that lettin' ur car "idle".......would only add to wear and tear

the best waY to do it is to .......just take off....soon as u turn on the car
brakes and all that will warm up much faster.

My 2.2 cl manual says lettin' ur car idle for more than 3 min. is a NO NO

ONLY on real cold dayz.......u should let it run for like a minute TOPS.

remote starts ok if you have an automatic cuz if you have a manual your looking at 7-800 for it.. warm up can depend on the type of oil you have also.. well instantly

Finially someone that does the same thing as me. I thought it was good for the tranny to let it warm up also I also notice if I just drive off the tranny drives like crap.

I let my car warm up for 10 min everyday. I leave the defroster and heater on when I get out. My car idles high when first started cold also. I don't think it is a bad thing. By the way I have a manual with remote start , Viper 791! It was 200 for the alarm and 100 for the install. If I leave it in gear it WILL take off. I have gotten in the routine and have yet to have a problem. The hardest part was trying to find a place to install the alarm in a manual transmission.

I let it sit untill it idles at around 750-790 rpms. As mentioned before, it's to get the oil pump working and pumping oil into the engine. Otherwise driving it from a cold start, without proper lubrication is just going to wear your engine faster/more. If the manual says it's bad to "warm up" the engine for MORE than 3 minutes, than that statement alone indicates that there is no/little harm in doing so for up to those 3 min. imo......

But I'll never drive my car (or any car) without it letting get proper lubrication going through the engine. (well, except for the van, lol)

The reason being for your car warming up "faster" when driving it without warming it up, is because there is an inefficient amount of lubrication in the engine's components which is now creating friction (heat) at a faster rate which is initially bad (due to more wear). So of course it'll "warm up" faster, but it's going to do more damage than letting it sit there at low rpms to get it's proper lubrication.

i understand wat u sayin'.........but i'll follow ACURA's advice on this one.

Y argue with the manual..........

cold dayz........i live in the northeast so i can talk about a cold start or two.
but i rather go with wat the manual says

I understand by letting it idle there too long is bad as well.......

I'm just saying, if the manual does in fact say "it is bad to let the car warm up after 3 minutes", then it seems to imply (in my opinion) that it is okay to let it warm up, up to those 3 min (0-3 min.) If the manual says, it's bad to let the car warm up period, then it's a different story, and I would have not argued with that. I'm just trying to get the full meaning out of the statement from the manual. You know how it is, always more info behind the info provided.

example: Intake can give gains of up to 20hp. (well that implies it can give gains of 0-20hp)

So if it says it's bad "After" 3 min, it' seems like it would be okay before 3 min. But I don't have the manual, so I dont know exactly how it is stated in there. Not trying to argue, just explaining myself as to how I interpreted the manual's statement. So i'll just lay off the subject since I don't have the manual and would hate the give the wrong advice.

Uh, no. Just as oil heats up, it thins. Nothing worng with that. That is just what oil does. My point is any idle time over a couple minutes is not necessary, you can get driving after a minute or two.

with both.
It takes 5min. for my temperature gauge to rise above the
bottom line. That's when i'm gone...
I also notice that when I warm up my car it runs a lot better
and as chinismo said " shifts smoother". When I don't warm
up my car, my auto tranny jolts on every shift, not hard but
you can feel it.
