Tranmission #2 dead

#1 died with 75K miles on it
#2 died yesterday with 65K miles on it (60 miles from home)

Fuck Acura North America. Fuck their transmissions. Fuck the dealers for wanting 2x what a garage wants to rebuild and fuck the dealers again for not even wanting to hear about work that wasn't done by them (even though they send transmission work out anyway). I'm completely done with Acura and won't let a friend or family member buy one after the shit I went through with my 3.0 and hearing about all the shit the 2nd gen guys went through. For anybody considering buying one and reading this, consider yourself warned.

The f22s aren't the problem - it's the J30s that got the pos trannies.

I do whine alot, but you would too if you're looking at spending $4K+ in an 18 month window on transmissions for a car with under 100K on the odometer. I'm completely done with Acuras - not impressed.

Not hard at all. Never raced, the tranny has been weak from 1st to 2nd for over a year now so I never floor it or accelerate hard even since I have to baby it into 2nd.

Listen you dumb fuck, I didn't rebuild it, I got a completely different used one. What would you have done genius? And I know it's confusing, but try figuring out the quotes thing next time, 'kay?

What is it with these transmissions? I'm beginning to think it's something with the car and not the transmission. Why is that some people go through trannies like crazy and other people have absolutely no problems.

I have a 3.0, and I drive fairly rough but I have almost 110,000 miles and no tranny problems.

The second one was sold to me as having only 40K miles on it and my installing mechanic said that looked about right. What would you suggest doing I'll ask again, genius? Get one from the dealer for around $4K that's rebuilt anyway?? Hook the engine up straight to the driveshaft? Cut a hole in the floor and use my feet? Think dumbass, think!

Zero - I suspect you're right about something else being a problem. I'm thinking the TCU might be messing them up but Acura of course denies that there are any problems whatsoever so we'll never know.

well let's see....a used engine with 40K miles......add 65K miles and you get 105K miles. pretty decent longevity for it. too bad you never thought about rebuilding your existing tranny.

maybe mechanics in your parts charge too much. a full rebuild in charlotte is only 1200-1500 with warranty no matter where you go! ( except dealer)

Not the 97s - I think they only extended the tranny warranties on 2000+.

what year is your 3.0? If you spent $4k on it why didn't you just get the Dr. evil? It's the same price, plus whatever teh install would be.

my 1st tranny lasted me 140K miles...and i admit i have a heavy foot....i would floor it everyday and every chance i got.....just got it rebuilt from a very repected transmission shop a few month now...cost me $2100 after tax and all....replace everything with dealer parts...no aftermarket stuff. i'm very impress with the rebuilt of my tranny.

Engine? What isn't making sense to you here? The original transmission lasted me to 75K miles. Then I bought one that had 40K on it already and only got another 25K out of it. So you think "decent longevity" is 100K miles for an auto tranny, let alone the actual 65K I got on it?!

I'm sure mechanics around here charge more than they do in Charlotte because the cost of living and everything else is more expensive around here. AAMCO charges $2500. The dealer wants close to $4K. Every other transmission place I've checked with wants over $2K.

B/c I didn't see the 2nd tranny dying too when I replaced the first? And at the time it was more or less untested, if it even existed...

Always Dirty, I agree with you about fucked trannies being in the 97-99 year CL's. The reason I did my swap was because my tranny was going up at 80K and I felt as though buying a tranny for 2k would not be worth it, I got a Prelude front clip for 2500 and converted over to manual so I would have to worry about clutches and not a tranny. Boy am I glad I did that because I was not going to be put in the same predicament that you are in now. I asked my self, do I want to pay for rebuilt or new tranny that has the possiblility of going up again? I was like hell naw let me just go with a different engine and tranny. Good luck man, I feel your pain.

So your first post in this thread makes fun of me (erroneously) for rebuilding my "weak" transmission, then you flip and say I should have rebuilt it? You're a fucking moron. You lead off with the 'boo-hoo' shit and it just makes you sound like a little acura fan-boy, but I know better - you're just a 24 year old hayseed who's "4eva Mystified" by his engine. And there's plenty more rep where that came from, just keep it up.

Shit wouldn't even fix the shit, I'd trade that bitch in and let the dealership or person buying the car deal with it. The plus of trading it in. May take a bite out of the value but fuck it, be done with it.

I guess so. I should have jumped on the $8K the guy at Subaru was going to give me towards a WRX last year. In the 3 years I've had this thing it has cost me about $5K in repairs and maintenance.

probably better off fixing it and selling it privately....dealer trade in cost with a blown tranny is probably terrible

I'd love to do that but I wouldn't get much for a trade in when it has to be towed to their lot.

I called the Acura dealer and the parts department said Honda/Acura stopped rebuilding our transmissions at the factory because there were too many of them that came back in under warranty and they spent all their time at the rebuild plant fixing them for nothing. I told him mine was a 97 and he knew that, but not sure if he was talking about the 2000+ years...

Yeah I hear you. Sounds like you may have gotten a bad one out the bunch. I can honestly say the only problem I experienced with my CL thus far has been the Tranny. Other than that, I got the car with 30k on it and now has 115k and still going strong. Granted I swaped motors but I am positive that if my tranny didn't go I still proabably wouldn't have any problems. Everyone use to say I got a good one out the batch because my baby could run with that auto f22 in her. Sounds like you might of gotten your hands on a bad one.

Could be. After seeing the number of people on here with bad ones and all of the problems they had with the 2nd gens though I think it might be more than just getting a bad one. Regardless, Acura customer service hasn't done anything for me except give me the runaround, even when I was dealing with them a year and a half and 30K miles ago.

Sorry about your transmissions. Mine is in the shop as we type with 50k on it Acura wanted 3200 to replace it I am having it rebuilt for 1900. Is there no way to get Acura to admit it's a lemon? I love the car but will not be replacing Transmissions over & over.
