Tranmission #2 dead
1st gen transmission fixes
The one thing that hurts the 1st gen transmission is that honda doens't have a efficent way of filtering the fluid in these transmissions. There are no filters on these transmissions unlike conventional transmissions. The best way to keep your transmissions clean and maintain long life is to have them flushed out. Most transmission shops now offer this new technology which not only gets rid of all the old transmission fluid even in the torque convertor but the use a special cleaner which actually cleans away the residue left from normal wear inside your transmissions but it also helps give the clutches a new surface instead of the glazed surfacewhic causes slipping. Also the addition of a medium to large trans cooler is best because it keeps the transmission fluid at a lower temperature and gives it more capacity.
I too have a 97' 3.0. I replaced my transmission at about 60K. Got a rebuilt one from a trusted transmission shop. They warrentied the new tranny for 75K. No problems so far after putting about 35K on the rebuilt tranny, but I'm not worried about it either since it's covered. That's the reason you should go with a rebuilt one instead of going the cheaper route in getting a used one.

If your car has lower mielage, than yea, I would recommend it.
But for the most part, not too many people think about taking care of their tranny untill it's about to go. Some people probably havent ever changed thier coolant either, which should be done every 2 years or 24k. (not talking about CL's, just car owners in general). There's more to car care than just an oil change. Most people on the road just think as long as they change their oil, everything is all gravy. And yea, the car will keep running, it's just the fact that it's not good for it.
i have 13,500 on an 03 cls... no problems... i bought it in september of 03... so just over year now..
no major tranny issues....
sorry to heasr about your tranny.... i am hoping the car will be ok for me...

To Dirty and all the rest...
1st, you could be driving some POS FORD...
2nd, I have a 98 CL with 98,000+ and not long agao I experienced some minor slippage from 3rd to 4th gear. After checking the dipstick, I discovered the fluid level in the transmission was low and very dirty. I took the car in and had the fluid topped off. And for now, the slippy feeling seems to have subsided. I just bought the car a month ago, so I don't know really how it was driven, though I could tell it was well maintained by the records. I am having the tranny flushed and refilled on monday.
Hopefully this will pose a solution to the tranny replacement delemna.

Major question, if anyone knows... Why has Acura not included pre-2000 models?

So I spent 2K and have a rebuilt transmission which still does not feel right & they broke the cruise control! First they said I was crazy & that they didn't break it, but I got them to fix it. I had sold my wife's car and we needed another car & Acura was not even a consideration. I am going to make them make the transmission right & sell this thing as I just don't trust it. I mean a car with less than 35k shouldn't be having major problems.
BTW I bought a 2004 Passat GLX with everything except 4 wheel drive for 24,995! Its pretty damn cool. I really like the automatically moving side mirrors that move down when you put it in reverse so you can see the curb & the auto wipers (they come on on their own when it rains)

Well, doing what Acura said got me terrible results. I put the car in for a new transmission on tuesday, after having it serviced on Monday. To Acura dealer's credit, they told me it would not fix the problem, however they did not tell me it would make it worse or crah the tranny the next day. Overdrive went more or less out, then third started getting confused. I did however, take the car in before the ENGINE malfunction indicator came on. So probably no problem with the PCM or the engine itself. Any body know about the PCM reprogram? Is it for 98 3.0 CL tranny TCM or just 2000+ like the warranty?
