Some VERY basic questions about buying a CL
Some VERY basic questions about buying a CL
I'm going to get a 2.3 5 speed as soon as i can find one, but i have a few newbie questions...
1. Which CL's came with spoilers? Was it just an add-on option? Can they be removed without any damage?(probably not)
2. Do the 5speeds have cruise control?
3. Anything in particular to look for mechanically before i buy one?
Thanks for any help fellas...

1. Yes, the spoiler was an add on option. You will have some holes to patch/painting to do if you remove it. I would leave it on.
2. Yes. Obviously, it is limited to maintaining speed in the gear you have selected, since the transmission cant change itself, but on the highway it does its job.
3. Not really. Someone else may add a couple things to check, but i think the 2.3 w/ manual tranny has the fewest problems.

But even if carfax doesnt show anything you still need to get it checked out. My car was in an accident 2 years ago with 8g's damage and nothing ever shows on carfax to this day. Thats why I save my money on carfax and have a private mechanic inspect cars before I buy them. Much more piece o mind in doing it that way.

it should be fine!

i think even though the 2.3 is a manual.. the 3.0 auto would waste it off the line, and on the highway.. (assuming everbody is stock)

its as simple as more hp=more fast???
it is a fact obviously that a manual trans would be cheaper to fix than a auto trans

and even though you got torq, since the 2.3s are manual (not all of them) they would get a jump on you in the beginning unless your good at power braking, but you would probably have it at 30mph+

hey... since i just got my 99 cl 2.3 ... ummm 6 days ago, ill tell you everything i checked for.
(b4 i start this, i had a Supra owner test drive the car, a body specialist to check for accidents, AND a mechanic to quickly check the engine etc..)
1. Definately CarFax the car... yes you might not see unreported accidents, and yes its not detailed, but heres the best thing- you can locate where the vehicle was bought which may give you a heads up on its condition. For ex. a major city like New York means pretty abused suspension, or a place way north might mean rust corrosion etc. Checking Carfax will give you its mileage recorded at Inspection sites, allowing you to determine HOW the car was driven.. weekend warrior or everyday driver.
2. Interior -- for 99's, leather i believe is standard.. and i think wood trim is too (someone confirm this please?) so if anything seems outta place, like carbon fiber trim or something, means its aftermarket, and of course check for obvious things like nick and scratches. TEST ALL ELECTRONICS ON THE INSIDE ... ANYTHING YOU CAN THINK OF. MIRRORS, RADIO, SUNROOF, AC. POWER SEAT...
3. Engine and Transmission -- im not mechanic BUT, heres come things to look out for. RUST in the engine bay. THIS IS BIG TIME.. i didn't notice it but many others did. This is a problem when repairing things, because rust can eat through screws, which may brake upon over or under torqueing them... look for worn screws.. this being by the fenders, if the paint is chip off those screws it may mean its been replaced... check the clutch height. it should be around or under the brake pedal, if its HIGHER than the brake pedal, it may mean you might need a new clutch soon (i need confirmation on that.) and check the obvious, fluids, brakes, dents.. weird noises.. btw, if u have someone with you, start the car, and go to teh exhuast pipe, and have them rev the engine. if its a funny color smoke OR a weird smelling smoke (not regular exhaust smell) it also may mean water or oil could've leaked out of the engine (confirm please!)
4. Exterior -- look for obvious things, knicks and scratches and different color gradient, bumps or weird non flowingparts may mean the cars been hit, and just had it banged out. check all the lights high beams and brake lights.
5. dunno what else, thats what i remember that i did, i made my decision in 5 hrs, BUT every day after i put a deposit down i had it checked out... now its running well aside from a headlight prob (check post.)
so good luck and sorry for this lengthy post, hope it helps you out in not choosing a lemon.
