so it's SUPER cold out, and my car seems louder +
As far as Baltimore weather goes, this is about as cold as it gets. Hi's in the 20s and lows in the lower single digits. Have only had my car since May. I've noticed over the past week once the freeze hit that my car seems a bit louder all around (keep in mind I have VERY sensitive ears- I've actually heard people talking about me behind my back at work before, and they were shocked, and embarrased to realize that I heard every word considering they were wispering several feet away from me a few cubes over, and were impressed with my hearing abilities!!!), mainly during the first 10 mins of driving. My exhaust doesn't look rusty, at least the muffler doesn't at all, so hmmmm. It's most noticible right around 2,000 rpm. I remember my '94 Accord had a 'buzz' right around 2k rpm. I know the 2.3s aren't exactly silky smooth engines, so maybe it's just running a tad bit louder when it gets super cold....
My car was a one owner car when I bought it in may, and it hails from Erie, PA, so I'm guessing the underbody has been through the ringer. During past trips to 7 Springs (near Pittsburgh) I've noticed that PA roads suck ass, and Erie is cold cold cold.
On the way to lunch the other day, I asked a co-worker/friend who was riding with me if he noticed the car being a tad bit louder than last time, and thinks I'm imagining things and just need to get a life and stop being so anal about my car .
I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow am to have a control arm replaced (long story- see my 'control arm' thread from 3 weeks ago, but 'goodwilled' by dealer). I'll have them give my exhaust a once over. Any input from cold climate CL owners.

yes, it's cold outside and not only your car is noisy....shoot everyone's is noisy as well
just be glad it's running and your oil hasn't frozen into thick guck and your battery still has enough juice in it to turn the car over

It's pretty much the same thing as a cold air intake. The colder the air is, the more dense the air is. Denser air makes a more violent combustion which produces more power and produces more noise.

well it should be ok after its well warmed up rite? i think whoever really cares about their cars would all have sensitive ears. after my first accident i've been hearing so much other noise that no one notice.

I know I'm rehashing this thread, but around here it has been in the single-digits and the teens in the morning. I notice my exhaust does seem to growl a little more loudly untill the car warms up. I think it is just the dense air both combusts harder and caries sound waves with increased magnitude. I'm sure your whip is snappin fine. Haha, I finally got to use my mirror warmers. They worked perfectly.
