I got my wifes car painted at Crapco the paint came off in strips down the sides after 3 months I went there and complained about it and they called me a a$$h0le,I just about pulled the guy over the counter. After a call from my Lawyer.. They ended up stripping the whole car and I went and saw every step they did. I ended up with a base coat clear coat paint job.I do not recomend them at all.

I forgot to say in the last post, Macco uses adhesion promoter instead of sanding the car down. It is a widely used product but does not replace good old hand or machine sanding. Just using the promoter by itself is a crap shoot.

Say no to maaco, my buddy had his truck repainted there, they did ZERO prep work, and painted over his existing paint, it was ALL orange peel

If 97BlackAckCL says no to Macco, I will too.

I think I will just go with doing my front bumper and rear bumper along with my hood for 600 bucks with this local auto body around my way -- the guy expressed how "prep is essential" to a flawless finish.

Prep, wet sanding and buffing needs to be done by someone that takes pride in their work.
Just about any painter can lay paint.
I would fairly give the job 10% painter 90% prep and finishing to have a nice long last job providing you use quality painting materials.

I can't believe a national company like that would not focus on sanding and prepping the car for a high quality finish.

cl-baller201 - Are you honestly surprised by the responses you're getting? Did you really think you were going to get a legit paint job for $1300? A legitimate, full body paint job that is going to look like factory and last is going to cost around $8K.

this is gonna sound naive, but yea I'm surprised.

I thought you can get an official paint job for around 2k. Now I learn that it would cost around 8k.

If you take the time to wash your car with PPG wax and grease remover first, then sand the whole car, fill and feather all dings k36 all repaired areas, remove front and rear bumper covers, lights ect.. look for rust under the wheel wells. Wash again no soap just wax and grease remover, then scuff with a new gray pad, blow off tape off, tack cloth whole car, seal coat, primer, base, clear. There are a ton of steps to do a correct paint job. It takes time...thus money. You could get a nice paint job for $25-3000 dollars not pristine but nice.

I wouldnt even pay less than 3-4k. Anything price lower would scare me. Mine needs to be done, but I'm not touching till I can do it correctly.

This man speaks the truth. But if you prep it yourself which is easy work, just requires time and pataince, then Macco paint jobs aren't bad at all. My buddy had his Z Prepped himself, took it to Macco, and it looks flawless 3 years later.

I'm actually thinking of wrapping my car. If you have patience and a little skill you could wrap it yourself for under a grand, best part whatever color you want, lasts 4 yrs if done correctly and if you dont like it, peel it off. I'm thinking about going black and just do one panel a day so I dont get frustrated.

I too am interested in sanding and prepping my car for new paint as it looks like ass in the sunlight lol! I've been told if it's original paint that a light scuffing will do but am afraid to just start sanding away. Anyone have experience with this.

I can give you a better deal on a matte silver color from 3M for $2200

There is no satin red vinyl yet on the market. only high gloss red and is still around the same price.
I was going to do that to my CL, maybe a satin silver or corsa red looking at the cost on eBay with shipping to Canada, I am looking at 2k CAD to do by myself.

Not bad really. I may plasti-dip the wheels too. that's even cheaper like 3 cans or so at $8/can

Another Option

You coud always plastidip it yourself. you spray it on but if you ess up or dont like it, you can just peel it right off

Sanding the car for paint will really depend on the condition of your paint now. Like someone said earlier the prep is a HUGE part of how your paint job turns out. For this reason if I wanted a nice paintjob i would leave it to the pros. The other biggest factor is the quality of paint you use. A nice paint job is gonna have at least 1200-1500 in materials alone. Also mentioned earlier In an "all over" paint job bumpers, lights, door handles, mirrors, belt moldings, grilles should all be removed before paint. NICE paint jobs require a lot of work and attention to detail and thats why it's so expensive.

I had my 93 Z28 painted at maaco here locally because someone keyed the car and I have seen others that had theirs done at maaco and if you got quotes that is close to the maaco price I would say definitely go to the others because these types of places make their money on turn around and do not care anything about quality. All they want is the car they are working on out of there so the next one can come in. The prep work is the foundation of a good paint job and if you don't do the prep you will never have a good paint job. I have seen good auto painters spend 4 times as much time doing the prep work on a car than it takes to do everything else including disassembling, paint and reassemble and you can really tell with the final product. I may use a place like this is I had already done the prep work myself because anyone can spray a car if they have a nice clean area (which I don't have) or if I was just wanting a cheap paint job because I was getting ready to sell the car, but if it was going to be something I was wanting to keep for awhile and look nice I would pass on the job they do there

Started sanding more today. Gonna do the whole car by hand, pretty much just scuffing the paint with 320 grit and a sanding block. Then go for a respray as the car is old and funds are limited. I will take all moldings etc.. off as well. It's some tedious work for sure!

I know of a great body shop out in Lyndhurst NJ, they do great body repair as well as painting. They're old school, so you know you'll get a great job out of them. If you're still interested it's called "Collision Body Works". The owners name is Adolfo, go see him if you're still looking to get your car painted.

And if anyone is interested in having their engine bay painted, they're the people you'll want to talk too. If you, or anyone wants the address to the shop, just PM me and I'll be glad to provide it.
