Oil & Check Engine Light
Oil & Check Engine Light
1999 2.3 - During my commute the other day I bumped the auto tranny from D4 to D3 at about 70 mph. I popped it back into D4 and the Check Engine light came on. Several minutes later the Oil Pressure light started to blink. I pulled over and checked the oil level and looked for any obvious problems ... everything looked OK.
I changed the oil today but the oil light still lights. It illuminates steady under 1200 rpm and blinks above 1200. WTF?
Any ideas out there?

WHOA A TACOMA PERSON!!!! HAHAHAHAH NICE!!!
Ok I had to get that out...but I dunno man o.O
You should go to the dealer or something....
btw you should meet up with me and nippon and legendary98CL sometime! nippon_WA has insane mods....I used to have quite a bit of DIY mods, but took most of them out so I can sell the car. I'd definitely get the dealer to check it out.
Have you tried unplugging the battery, let it sit for 10 mins, then plug it back in? That might restart some stuff...I know it restarts the ECU....but it could reset other computers.
Try it!

Very cool ... glad to see a few local NW-ers.
I did try disconnecting the battery and when I hooked it back up (after 5 min) both the check engine and oil lights were out. I let it warm up for about 10 minutes and then the oil light came on and after driving about 5 miles the Check Engine light decided to join the party.

did u pull the codes yet?
it sounds like the oil pressure switch is bad or clogged. it is located just beside the oil filter (i think)
remove it and eather replace it or clean it out with some carb cleaner. if that doesent work, it may bee the oil pump (which is pretty rare) how many miles do u have on it?

Thanks for the feedback ...
I'm gonna pull the codes tomorrow. I bought the car in '02 with 36k on it. I commute 120 miles roundtrip, so I'm up to 97k on it right now, so the only thing the dealer can due for me is bleed me dry.
I'll have so seek out that oil pressure switch. Thanks again for the help.

OK ... here's the latest. I didn't have enough time to dive into this on my own, so I took it to a local mechanic. It turns out that one of the balance shaft bearings slid out of the block , onto the shaft and busted off. When they dropped the lower part of the engine the bearing (more like a sleeve) was crushed flat by the piston rods. This opened up the oil port to 3X the size, hence the low oil pressure light.
The bearing has a tab that is punched into the block to hold it in place. Either the bearing wasn't installed correctly when initially built, or it worked its way loose. Today they were installing a new bearing, and so far it looks good. I hope to get away with the cost of the bearing shaft and ... labor.
Just thought you'd like some VTEC 4-1-1.
