Oil!?!

This is probaly a dumb question, but my friend noticed from my exhaust that my car burns quite a bit of oil.

So when I goto check the oil should the engine be warmed up or cooled down???

And what should I look for on the metal stick to see if my car has enough oil???

Also if i have to add oil what do u recommend? For 121k

check the oil after the car has been running for a while, look to see that the oil is between the hi and lo indicator in the dipstick, cls tend to run rich, and yor friend may be noticing that, if you are burning oil the exhaust will be blue

Just shut the car off and wait a couple minutes for the oil to subside to the bottom of the pan. Pull out the dipstick, then wipe it off clean. Now put the dipstick back in and the level of the oil should be between the two marks on the stick. If you need to add oil, use the recommended oil for the car, I'm assuming that is what is in it. (I can't remember off hand.)

If you want to switch to synthetic, wait until you you're next oil change.

BTW, I highly recommend reading the owner's manual. The answer to this and many other questions can be found there. The more knowledge you have about your car, the better off you'll be in the long run.
