now i know why...

it always seem that my 98 corolla's accleration is much quicker than my current 97 2.2 cl. now i know why..aside from the weight issue, the corolla has DOHC.....while ours only have SOHC. damn...big difference!

wouldn't it be bomb if acura made the 3.0 cl 5 spd, along with adding an extra cam (dohc)? that would be such a kick ass car.

The J30 wouldn't benefit from a DOHC if Honda doesn't implement VTEC on the exhaust or VTC. Honda doesn't even implement VTEC on the exhaust of some of the DOHC i-VTEC engines. Sounds like a waste of weight to me.

fixed and if your corolla is faster than a 2.x cl the 2.x cl should be "lemonized" and all owners should sell them for scrap metal.i know the cl aint fast but a corolla thats not the old old model with work should get smoked by a 2.x. our cars may be slugs off the line, but in a race, my is even with an awsome launch the corolla will be hawked down relatively easily in the long run.........

The benefit of having a DOHC is that you can have more lobes available for the valves of each cylinder. Lobes control the timing of when, how long, and how high valves are open. Most Honda motors have 4 valves per cylinder.

Honda can put enough lobes on a SOHC motor for VTEC on the intake and non-VTEC on the exhaust. Having a DOHC motor with VTEC implemented on the intake only; simply adds weight with no performance increase. This is because you are taking the same lobes from the SOHC and separated them where one camshaft has the lobes for the intake and the other camshaft has the lobes for the exhaust.

Since extra lobes are needed to have VTEC implemented on the intake and exhaust; the extra lobs may not fit on a SOHC, so a DOHC is used. Also with DOHC engines with VTC, this allows the intake to advance/retard the intake timing independently from exhaust valves.

Most Honda/Acura 4 bangers are DOHC, I am still waiting for the same from the V6's, particularly the J series. Magazines and people praise the DOHC VQ35 Nissan/Infiniti engine as so great at 300HP/260tq. The new RL engine has all the same numbers, yet is only SOHC. I believe this only points to more potential, as evidenced by H/A 4 bangers of late. It wasn't long ago that a decent "mainstream" 4 cylinder wasn't producing much more than 100hp, now that number has doubled.

Well forgot I started typing this post and it's time to leave work, so I guess this is my input for the moment.

Yeh i wondered for a while about sohc and dohc .. i believe the engineers know what there doin - and if benz AMG's and and my ac cl-s are sohc and perform they way they do....the dohc thing may overrated and seems like its not nessesary- if the rl does 300hp on a sohc (god i want one)- but just to clarify... i know nothing...
