Mod that probably won't get noticed much

ok - I've been dying to put LED's in for my front turn signals. Trouble is, I can't find LED's (without going through APC) that match the wedge-base single-filament bulbs.

So....

1.) I bought dual-filament sockets today at Pep Boys.
2.) Cut-off the OEM sockets in the front signals
3.) re-wired the new sockets in place of the OEM signals
4.) ran the wire for the second filament over to the parking light in the corner (where I already have LED)

This allows me to:

1.) have the entire clear corners lit while the parking lights are on
2.) have the "signal" flash brighter when I'm signaling a turn
3.) the entire clear corner flashes when I lock/unlock the car
4.) put an LED from https://www.netdisty.net/ds/aut1157/default.asp into the socket and get rid of the yellow tint in my clears from the yellow bulb I needed for my turn signal.

Not sure how many of you guys/gals have done this but I can't wait for my LED's to get here so I can completely clear-out my corners!!

This was easy as hell if anybody else is thinking about doing it!

I say it won't get noticed much because....unless you drive a 1st gen & know that the signal bulbs aren't supposed to be lit when the lights are on, you'll think that's just the way the car is made.

"We" will know though right?

Send some pics when done. I think I might like to have my full turn signal light on just as you explained. Never knew how to wire it though.....I still would be to afraid to start cutting wires and stuff. Cool idea though.

problem with LEDs is that the angle is so tight, you wont get much reflection from the clear lenses, just spot blinking from the LED bulb. It looks tight though if you do it

These bulbs I ordered face to the front AND to the sides (to hit the reflectors).

check the link - it shows a diagram of the light output.

They better last....If they burn-out quick then

Leon - the part # is 84809 (double-contact socket: import)

It was a tight fit in the housing but it went in. I had to use pliers to twist it into "locked" position. I don't think it's going to work loose!

I've been wanting to do this for a while. But, I never thought about the led lights. I put in hyper white bulbs, but how would I get the turn signals to turn on when the corner goes on. Would it be as easy as just splicing the positive from the turn signal into the positive on the corner light?

with the dual-post socket, there's a hot lead for the parking light (splice that into the corner light)
there's another hot lead for the brighter filament (the turn signal), just spice that into the original hot lead of your original turn signal.

Bulbs just arrived today!

I'll see what they look like this afternoon......and tonight.
I hope to hell I can see them in the daylight!

Hey Bartman how'd it come out? Have any pics of how they look? I've been wanting to swap my blinker and parking light, I bet they look sharp!

they actually enforce that u have a yellow blinker???
i have piaa super white turn signal bulbs and super white push in bulbs

seems like a waste of money and time

You can make the entire corner light (both bulbs) be your parking and turn signal lights. You just need a couple SPDT relays, a few diodes, a resistor, some cennectors and extra wire.

I am not sure the resistor value (perhaps someone can chime in) that you would need to draw 10-15A @12-14 volts DC. Since the relay coil is low current, you need to increase the current pull on the turn singal wire after the conversion to make the flasher work correctly.

If someone can speak to the correct resistor value, I will do it, photgraph, and document the steps. I think it needs to be between .8 (@12v) and 1.4 (@ 14v) ohms. Be real easy if someone knew the turn singal flasher rating (in amperage)

the resistor is the problem.....can't seem to get enough resistance in the system now.....

I guess the relay sees it as a bulb is burnt out.....flashes way too quickly (like they do when a bulb is burnt out).

Back to Radio Shack - another day - too many other issues taking precedence at this time to keep re-wiring the front end

If anyone can recommend the correct resistor - that would be sweet!
