Launch technique...
I tried posting this in Competition... but to no avail.. nobody is reading it....
OK, so I'm curious as to the best way to launch. I am under the impression that you power up to around 3K rpms with the tranny in D3 and the brakes on. (Both feet)? Then when 1st raps out, go to D2, then D3 and D4. I just want to know if I have the launch part right. I don't want to eat my second transmission. wilp99 has posted many race stories that tout the fact that a good launch is the key. So, somebody chime in and tell me if I am on the right track. If not, what is a good start rpm? I am very conserned about damging the transmission. As of yet, I have never floored or launched the car off the line. Usually come off the line at around 1/2 throttle, which is sometimes not a good way to start. I've had some good rolling kills, but off the line, I've had my ass handed to me a couple of times. Please offer advice if you have it.

I wouldnt see the problem with startin in d1 and workin ur way up. I've heard it can ruin the tranny, then again the tranny probably woulda died anyway w/out doing that. I've noticed d1 has a quicker start than d2
as for launchin, I wouldnt mind hearin from other people what they do

Thanks for the input, I just want to know how to launch correctly. I know how in a manual... but these automatics scare me cause I had to replace mine once already. I tried a small launch on the way home from work. It felt real strange to get the RPMs up to 1.75K while holding the brake with my left foot. The car seemed to growl as though it were really straining. As I said, just want a good proceedure for launching, or someone to tell me I'm on the right track... As for shifting... well, you can do the 1+2+3+4. but that is a matter of controlling shift points. My concern is the actual launch... Sorry for carrying on like this... but I really want to know... wilp99, where are you... I didn't want to PM ya cause I thought this would be a good thread... Just doesn't seem to be any interest. Oh well. maybe one of you track racers will chime in on your technique. If not, so be it.
d2 is strictly 2nd gear.. never start in d2.. its like starting a manual in second gear.. i leave it in d3.. and power brake it.. you cannot get your rpm's over 2500 while power braking.. the torque converter locks up at that rpm..
power brake it to 2500 (in d3) then when the light turns green let off the brake and press the gas all the way to the floor.. you may get alittle spin at first but i gots 18's and it takes alot to get those things movin.. never go to d4, you will loose if the race is that close.
d3 takes you all the way up to bout 110mph at say 6k rpm's.. as soon as your goin that fast and you go to d4 your maybee pushin 4k rpm's and the tranny goes into over drive. HUGE momentem loss. however if its still neck and neck after you get to d4 you can prolly out run whomever you are racing, cause you can take it to 140+ as to where most cars govern at 115 or 125.
so moral to this story is, stay in d3.. start in d4 cause the tranny thinks it knows more and wants to go into od.

yes it will fuck up your tranny... and yes you need to hold the brakes..my e-brake will not hold my car still if thats all i have on.. one of the reasons why i cannot do a standing burnout, unless its wet then i dont even have to have the brakes on... or wanting to do it..
I thought it was hard on the transmission, thanks wilp99 and the rest of you guys for your advice. I was thinking wilp99 went Dr. Evil, so he's bullet proof. The rest of us better think twice about it because transmissions aren't cheap. Thanks again. I think I will only do this in situations where I am really needing to get the fuck down the road. Thanks again.
Oh, one other thing, I was saying in my first post that I start in D3, then when RPMs max out first and it shifts to 2nd, then I'd pull it back to 2nd to control the 2nd to 3rd shift point. But yeah, I would never start out in D2.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

sorry... these people make a custom racing clutch pack kit capable of handling 500hp... its 500$ for the master rebuild kit and another 500$ to get the torque converter bullet proffed.
