The Infamous 3.0 Automatic Transmission
The Infamous 3.0 Automatic Transmission
Ok, Lets try to make this a official thread and if so can we get a moderator to sticky this.
This thread will mainly be about 3.0 Automatic Transmissions, such as problems, signs of failiure, solutions, things to do to help it from failure.
My Questions
I really want to know, what was the flaw of the 3.0 tranny, what is weak about it, what breaks, what can I do?
Who here has had thier rebuilt, what did the mechanic say was broken? what was replaced, how much did it cost?
Recently I was at the autoparts store and wanted to know if anyone ha tried the lucas transmission stuff on thier 3.0 automatic transmissions, and what was the turn out?

What's this I hear about the 1st gen auto trannies being crap?
a. Differential bearing failure- usually indicated by the axle seals leaking
b. 2nd gear clutch pack failure- usually indicated by lack of second gear, excessive slipping in other gears, car redlines before shifting, delayed shifting (car hold current gear way longer than it should.
c. It is also highly recommended that you put a transmission cooler on your car to prolong the life of the trans and at a minimum change the fluid every year or 30K.

The bearings in the rear of the tranny break off and float move back and forth in side the tranny bouncing off of the gears. Also the torque convertors usually go. Between 1st and second is usually the most affected range, and shift hards, delays and slippage occur.
Well i dont have a 3.0 but my 2.2 auto is starting to slip and such, i did chage the fluid and it didnt look that bad? I also put in some of that lucas transmisson fix and it seems to help a little. It seems to downshift better and really only slips when the engine is cold. obviously not a permenent fix but should hopefully last a little longer til i can get it up for the winter
i dont beleave this is a topic..our trannies have the same problem as the 99+ tl's lack of fluid flow. and what little fluid gets to the clutch packs is too hot to do anything. wil's best suggestion, is to get a tranny cooler, and change fluid every 15k miles. the torque converters are basic honda tc's they are actually pretty good, they only fail because of the debris from the clutch packs bending the internal turbines and clogging the tranny filter. if you catch the problem right away, your t/c will be fine, if you drive with no second gear thinkin its gonna fix itself, itll be toast in 2 weeks. once the clutch material is gone theres nothing but metal hence the jerkey engagment.
another important contributing part is the sensors. 97's have an external vss, which if it goes bad will cause harsh shifting, even with no problem with the clutch packs. theres also the linear solenoid.. this one is prolly the #1 contributor to burning up trannies. theres pressure switches, (speaking from experience.. 3rd gear pressure switch.) mine was bad causing it to shift like ass from 1st to 2nd. how you may ask, when the third gear switch was gone, the ecu thought it was time to change gears to 3rd gear. but the tranny was like "im still in first so ill just go into second" and bam harsh 2nd engagment. i changed the 3rd gear switch and it was smooth as a babies ass. i hope this helps the next mofo who wants to start a stickey thread about trannies. holla pimps.
Hey will I wanted to ask you something....once in a while when I am cruising at like 40-50 it will slip for just a second like 4 or 5 times.....but then almost like all the time it will be fine.SO I wanted to continue your dream in like a few years and put in (i guess it would be the CL-S 6-speed).so I was gonna look into buying one now or whenever I can find one just incase the day comes.....so I can spend lots of money an have a conversion.....any hints or clues for me?
thats about the speed it will go into overdirve.. that could be what it is.
save alot of money. hows she runnin? hows tampa? i finally changed my avatar. but im about to sell the rover so ill be changin the avatar again.. (bought a new car) but yall will be very happy when i do.. heres a hint... it rhimes with sny kline..

two things.. a flush will bring it down faster. i say 15k miles on a good tranny. just changin the fluid cant ever hurt. if you flush, on the other hand you will desturbe the setaments and cause problems. change the fluid dont flush.

2.2 Manual: Filler hole on side of transmission (#12 on pic below)
3.0 Auto: Fill Hole on top of transmission located in rear driver side of engine bay (#7 on pic below)
You are supposed to replace the washer every time you unloosen the bolt.

Basically I'm trying to get that it's not your transmission. The heat from the tranmission has a very minimal effect on the temperature gauge, since it occupies very small space in the radiator.
If you want to know the temperature of your transmission fluid, you can put an inline sensor on the transmission fluid return line. Then attach that to a gauge which displays degrees in Fahrenheit or Celsius in your car.
